WARNING ABOUT WIFI SITES!
They are NOT secure!
DO NOT use them to access ANYTHING with a password especially ANYTHING that has to do with your money!
REASON: WIFIs can be hijacked and you will not know it! All it takes is someone with a bigger transmitter to rebroadcast the stores WIFI and you are had. You can have the best firewalls and malware protection and virus protection money can buy but they are useless with a hijacked site! They are reading info off a radio signal.
I was parked next to a truck several years ago at a Pilot when the FCC and sheriffs department pulled up in front of him and arrested him and impounded his truck. When they did my connection was severed and I reconnected again with half the signal strength. I asked the FCC guy what was going on and he explained it to me and then looked at my computer history and showed me where I connected to him due to the 100% DB reading and then when they shut it down. He actually wanted a copy of my event viewer and a few other files, and I let him! I'm glad I didn't sign in to my bank or sensitive sites! Just yahoo and I was playing DOD at the time!
Microsoft and Firefox just came out with a new addon that helps to protect you from this kind of stuff.
Look at your url and see if you see HTTPS the "s" means secure and you should see a lock at the bottom right of your page. If it's broken or unlocked get off that wifi site!
Wifi sucks for online games! I gave up on wifi after that fun and informative evening but playing a game in a parking lot when 200 other computers are hooked to it and someone drives between you and the antenna will leave you frozen while every noob in the room kills your arse as you're stuck frozen in the air as you were jumping over something or as you were throwing a spell and you're standing there as the other guy cuts you in half with his pocket knife!
Then there is the cost of having to go to a truck stop or MickeyD's or close to a motel just to get on line at a not so secure spot!
The cost of unlimited broadband is well worth it! Especially if you're paying for the fuel! You WILL save more in fuel which will more than make up for the cost of that broadband card. Besides, if you're at a roadside stop miles away from BFE and no wifi around then just sit and watch the cows eat! broadband is pretty much anywhere you are unless you're way past BFE!
That 5 gig or 10 gig is NOT much if you want to watch a movie or download a few pictures and no where enough to play a game if laid over for the weekend! Also go over that limit and have price shock when the bill comes in!
Look at carriers websites and look for their broadband 5 gig or whatever they have limits chart and think about buying that TV as you'll need it OR renting a ton of movies or downloading a bunch while at home. this is Sprints information page! http://support.sprint.com/support/a...40658#__highlight&id16=broadband+useage+chart you will notice that a movie is 700 mb! so that leaves you 4.25 gigs left and it's the 1st day of the month! you get 6 more to watch but no you tubes, picture downloads nothing but email, or surfing as long as you don't stream anything BUT not that there is all this advertisement crapola on then I wonder how that is effecting the useage?
If you were like me and used the computer as your main entertainment system, broadband is worth every penny and is secure from most of the fools out there trying to hit you up! It's up to you to decide who to go with and to look CLOSELY at their service chart and when I say closely I mean to open them up and get a closeup as the areas change the closer you go into them.
I have found no single carrier that has a 100% coverage nationwide.
It would be best to get the one in the area you haul in the most!
It's also fun to watch some moron noob attempt to access your computer using the network link in Windows!bluedee, Mattkujata and truckerdaddy24 Thank this. -
so are you good using verizon and such for the bank stuff vs wifi?
-
You're very secure using any broadband versus a wifi! As I said you can NOT tell if you're on Starbucks wifi or on the hackers copycat from the van parked in front of the store! If you just want to look at porn then have at the wifi! But if it pertains to a secure website for your banking information, your facebook page or your email then I would not go there! And as someone else said watch your speed fall off as the parking lot fills up! Not to mention something like $2.00 an hour? I'm glad when I did use the truck stops web site I used points off my fuel card! Except for that useless Flying J and I just went without as they didn't like my points!
I did forget to mention that IF you can get a PCMI card for the laptop get it! YES they do cost more but they work better than a USB one. Another thing about the USB plug is they wear out the internal USB plug in the computer from all the virbrat5ing and if they get hit and bounced on. It is better to use a USB extension cord with the USB broadband card.
If you don't know what a PCMI card is it is a flat card that slides INTO your computer somewhere on it's on the side. It's about 1"to 2" inches wide and as thick as 3 credit cards stacked together. It's a much better system! It's just the cost of buying the card which is stupid but these engineers, as usual aren't thinking their USB dream through!
OOPS! I forgot another thing...use your broadband for your work and deduct it from your taxes. It's not much of one but every penny counts!truckerdaddy24, bluedee and Mattkujata Thank this. -
I use my 3g smartphone through Verizon as a hotspot and tether my laptop to the
phone and use it's internet connection.
I also have a USB aircard through another carrier that I will be getting rid of since
tethering to my phone is MUCH MUCH faster.
I'm able to watch videos with no lag or anything of that sort.
As long as your on YOUR OWN password protected wifi like something through
Verizon or ATT than your good to do banking and stuff. Use someone else's
wifi or leave yours open and your playing with fire. Few times I've had my phones
wifi unlocked at truckstops others have tried connecting to my network. -
well 60 a month adds up, and with that i dont see why everyone isnt using it.
-
Verizon charges an extra $30 something a month to use your smartphone as
a hotspot for your laptop or any other device, which is in addition to the already
$30 for the unlimited data you gotta have.
But with a little research and tickering you can access the hotspot and other
features for free.
-
Just heed my advice, if you also have the phone connected to a power source, then pay attention to the heat your phone generates since it will be using your WiFi antenna/chip, your 3G antenna/chip, AND a constant influx of hot electricity. This will shorten the life of your phone or some of it's components (right now my GPS antenna on my iPhone 3G is finally fried, I'm not surprised). If you plan on keeping the phone for a year then it's not a big deal, but if you plan on 2-3 years then expect it to break somewhere in beween.
-
Rollover you said exactly what i was thinking about the security. However, if you use your laptop to connect to another device, e.g. a tv or game console etc., make sure you did not accidently set up an ad-hoc network. this can make for a HUGE security flaw. also in todays world NOTHING is as secure as a wired network. anything wireless, including 3g/4g can be hacked if one has the proper knowledge and equipment. a long shot i know, but still a possibility. anyhow thats my 2c.
-
I had a co-driver that played WOW. He would use my wireless card. I have 5g limit and with both me and him on the wireless card I think I went over one time. I have verizon and pay like 60 a month for it.
