Nothing working for county roads or concrete plants?
I had the same issue going over the road again. I had to take a refresher and spend a week teaching new students how to back up.
Had fun, but really did not like paying for it.

The insurance carrier may not be to blame... they trucking companies don't want drivers who can't read a map, aren't used to being gone from home, etc.

The last outfit I leased to had a few of their long time local drivers go OTR for a couple weeks during the harvest season and it was like being a babysitter... they got past Chicago and they had to be hand-fed directions, routes, fuel stop locations, etc. just like a newbie.

Doing the refresher course helps weed out some guys who would never be happy on an OTR routine ...

this is something i'm deciding, right now i've got a B and drive locally and have for a few years. this winter i'm gonna be taking some private classes at a trucking school (i'm paying for it) so i can get the A. i can drive a truck pretty nicely, i dinged a truck here and there in the 3 years i've been driving but nothing even reportable or serious at all. the allure of going out on the road has always appealed to me, but can i handle being gone from home? what about my 2 dogs? girlfriend? friends? band? its a lot to take in. i can definitely see a trucking company making someone take a course before they will hire them.

Problem is, that course in NO WAY prepares you for being on the road for extended periods and missing your family.

Friends? Get used to them being phone friends.
Family? Get used to the phone family (you are going to miss them!)
Dogs? Perhaps you could take one, when you become eligible.
Band? I think you know the answer to that
Girlfriend? I'd bet that she would stick by your side.

Not easy. You gotta give up a lot to get.... well... not much money driving OTR. Be careful though, once you get OTR, you'll have a hard time getting it out of your system.
