Hello all,
Headed to Millington just before Thanksgiving, and just wanted to know what I can do in the meantime to better prepare myself. If anyone has advice or information on any of the following i'd appreciate it.
1. Pre-Trip Inspection, and anything else to study before hand.
2. Anything you would've done to better prepare yourself before heading to training. Or questions you should of asked that a newbie may overlook.
3. Since there's no APU's should I bring a sleeping bad down to stay warm in the midst of winter.
4. Any advice on being on my dispatchers good side as best as possible.
5. Any advice on shifting, or available methods to study to become more familiar before heading to class?
Excited to begin my new career, thanks alot for any and all help!

find and take all the practice quizzes on the internet. I forgot where i found some, but very usefull. Also, check the TN DMV for a CDL study guide. I know atleast Idaho had one that i read on the bus up to Lewiston, and then get to class and got the same thing handed to us. If you can....read it, and highlight things you think you might need to know. Odds are, you probably will.
BOL18wheelsofsteel Thanks this. -
Get some earplugs for sleeping... snoring/loud tv watching roomates etc.
Lack of sleep from the 4:30 wake time (5:15 am bus pickup) over the 2-3 weeks is rough.
Read and re-read your state CDL booklet (get it from your local DMV)
Become familiar with the parts on the truck for pre-trip.
Wear comfortable shoes on the range.18wheelsofsteel Thanks this. -
I just left Millington,,it was to say the least an experience,,lol
Just make sure that all your I's are dotted and you T's crossed before you get there.
We started with 47 people the 1st Monday,,and were left with 28 by the time the day was over, due to things like ,,forgotten medical info,,high blood pressure,,contacts being dry, and of course the misinformation that most recruiters forgot to inform the student they would need.
We lost a few by the end of the week due to medical/criminal background checks getting back in.( if your still there by the 1st Saturday then your there to finish)
The classroom is really boring at times,, and they let you look at a mapbook for about an hour one day,,the next you are quizzed, you must score minimum of 80% average on all the test to continue .The range is great, they demo for you once, ride off on their golf carts,,then let you do the backing maneuvers.
They will let you try to figure out what you are doing wrong before they roll up and help you.( If you are fortunate enough to get Gary and Dee as instructors on the range, heed what they tell you(great people)
As for the motel,, be very careful NOT to leave valuables in the rooms.
You have shopping very near the motel, Fred's, Krogers, and Walmart is a little farther of a walk.If you like pizza,,lil ceasers is just past Fred's,,lol ($5.00)
Oh, we graduated 22 of the original 4718wheelsofsteel and Fewe Thank this. -
Thanks alot for all the advice and tips and yes, I'm expecting an experience like one I've never been through before. Excited nevertheless!

Most important is sleep before going... you won't get much once you are there!!! You are going to be T I R E D but it is a great time. As stated study your state CDL book and take the online practice tests. Also, Swift will have you do On-Line CDL training... write down all your answers while taking the quizzes and make note of the correct answers. Then retake them to get all 100's on them. The on-line tests count towards your overall score which, as stated, must be over 80% for the total course.
Gary and Dee rock as do all the Instructors and Road Trainers!!! I was in the class with grnberet31 and can say that we definitely had some fun. They have a sink-or-swim attitude to teaching but it prepares you for the real world of Trucking. Get a good partner for Straight-Line-Backing and pre-trip and you will be fine.
You got that... A'ight!!!! -
Where's yer trouble? steer to yer trouble,,ya got that,,A'ight!!!!
HOOAH to Gary -
at the motel there's a trailer you can use to practice your PTI... few are the students using it but it's pretty helpful...
