Team Werner

    I'm an experienced driver. 6 years locally, driven about 750k miles. No DoT recordable accidents. So I have a pretty good record. My problem with being local right now, with my current company they have almost no loads. In the past 3 weeks i've had 5 days off when I normally should have worked. Plus I've heard OTR is always going to pay better than local.

    I'm only 27 yrs old and I want to run hard and make money, and local with my current company, they aren't allowing that. I'm due to make $35k at the end of the year, does that sound right? Not to me.

    Anyways, I told the wife about going OTR and she said she wanted to come with me (she's unemployed and can't find a job to save her life). I told her, rather than come along in the truck and watch me, maybe she could goto CDL school and we can drive team.

    I checked around, swift isn't hiring anyone in FL right now, Crete Carrier (heard they're awesome), is only asking for experienced people. So I went with Werner , as they have a lakeland, FL terminal, take people out of school, and will allow us to take our dog. I've also heard that the Team Werner division runs you, HARD.

    For two people in our 20's, who want to make as much money as possible, and run our ##### off, is this a good plan? We have no children and no real need to be lazy and sit around, or ask to go home, so I think we have the right attitude.

    My point of this thread, is, does this sound like a good plan? Is there a better company for an inexperienced 21 yr old girl who's gonna be right out of school? I have lots of exp. but she doesn't and that's going to be what holds us back. I called Werner and they said our team would be on my experience pay, and with 6 yrs our truck would get .38 a mile, with bonuses if we meet them.

    If there's a better company for the goal I'm trying to achieve, I'd like to hear it. There seems to be a lot of Werner horror stories, but that's true w/ any company. Even the one I've been w/ for 6 years. Can't be much worse than my $35k a yr local job.

    i run teams with my wife with trans am...we do really well but we rarely take hometime we are lease ops. wich has its good ad bad points...both of us came straight out of driven school...me first her six months later....i think you have to be employed with them 90 days to get to train her yourself...otherwise she has to go with a female trainer.....check on the age requirement though it may be 23 not sure...www.transamtruck.com.....be patient with her out there,its a lot of power for one woman to handle....thats actualy my wifes quote...

    I hope werner will work out for you they have really bad communication with drivers so just be aware of that

    If you're going to make $35K at your job now WHY are you thinking of going with Warner a company that pays low and SCREWES you with that per diem pay? If you clear $30K with them your first year you went backwards from where you are now!

    Let your wife get her CDL BUT hire on locally and you'll both be at home! Or then decide to go OTR as a team.

    If you do decide to go with Werner ask before you go if you can opt out of that per diem and not some stupid crapola that yes after the first 6 months or year! These theives CHARGE you over 1 cents a mile to "figure" your per diem pay! Yeah right! It's done automatically by the computer so where's the "work" they do to figure this "deal" out?

    And because you're young go read all about what this per diem pay will do to you in more than 1 way!

    Just remember that Werner has about 5000 trucks and 7000 drivers. If you figure a whole penny a mile that every drivers drives for that "priveledge to figure the per diem pay" then thats an awful lot of money put back in Mr. Leathers wallet or Werners nort to mention the taxes he "opt out" of paying in this hurt econmeny whrn America needs it until you hear that this POTUS is going to spend $200,000,000 a DAY on a trip to Africa! This makes you wonder if Werner is right and keep that money out of his hands!

    I worked for werner under their TZ division. Its basically running team but your partner lives far away from where you live. I have heard good things about team werner. I never had problems running unless I was dealing with night or weekend dispatch. So I would run really hard for 5 days then weekend comes I would end up sitting waiting to deliver for 5-7 hours. Then after each load on the weekends I would wait an hour or so before I got another load. I would still be moving but at what seemed like a snails pace in comparison to the weekdays. Just make sure to tell your fm or dispatcher everything that might cause any delay. better to inform them that you might be late way ahead of time and show up on time then to wait till its to late to tell them you will be late. I still run for werner I am now a trainer and an o/o. stay company and save your money. if you want better money don't lease BUY your truck though independent finance lower interest and if you have a falling out with the company you can lease onto another with your truck. but get atleast 1 year otr before making such choices. the money will be better as o/o if you are smart enough to pull it off. alot of people try and alot fail but only the strongest survive. but I wish you luck. and tell wifey to go talk to the unemployment office they paid for alot of peoples schooling at the school I went to called roadmaster. But rollover is correct in saying there are better paying companies out there.

    My wife and I drove team for Central Ref and made really good money. Husband wife teams are the way to go! I would steer clear of the mega-carriers though! Your chances of success are going to be a lot lower! Most if it has to deal with the dispatchers. They are just responsible for too many drivers and this makes you a number. Not a good situation for success! There are too many other excellent companies out there. A good rule of thumb is to stay away from the companies that are doing a lot of advertising. This means their driver turnover rate is high. Also stay away from companies that your school recommends. The school gets paid to send you to them.

    You really think we'd make less than $35k, combined, going OTR, never being home?

    I've heard a LOT of bad stuff about werner, for solo drivers. Team werner is a divison where the truck never stops moving. We get a minimum of 20k miles per month....

    I want to run hard for the first year, get some experience for wifey, and maybe we can move on from there. But I'm sure we'll make more than $35k combined, lol. If not, I'll definitly take my career elsewhere.

    And I'm not sure what this "per diem" crap is, but I'll discuss pay with my recruiter and decide on a good cpm flat rate, and opt out if he asks me to do it....

    When I called just to inquire a few days ago, they said they can use my 6 yrs of exp and set me at .38 a mile. Whether that's true or not, I'm not sure.

    He will not ask you to do it. they try to slide it in with all the rest of the orientation paper work. I took it for while I was in training. But opted out upon completion of training. As a team with them I was doing about 4750 a week on avg. I say this was the avg. because some weeks would be 4000 and some 7000 but over all about 5000 was the number I saw more often then not. as team werner you will most likely be making 32 cent per mile. of course this number is divide by 2 and half goes to the wife and the other half goes to her also lol. Werner really isn't that bad of a company other then the pay sucks. but they have kept me moving so I still make good money. I know alot of people make more cents per mile but far less miles so what good is 50 cent a mile if you only get 1000miles verse me and my 32 cents and 7000 miles in a very good week. What I would do is get wifey the experience under her belt. then if you two decide to do this long term find a better company that will take you both on. make that money stack it up and hope she don't get knocked up :biggrin_25523:

    I'm not really concerned about getting a huge amount of pay cpm, since this is my first OTR job, and my wife's first trucking job, period. We'll probably just do it for a year and get experience and possibly move on. As long as they keep us moving, I hate sitting around doing nothing.
