Hello everyone. I have been an O/O for a couple of months now. I started out with a local company here in Jonesboro, AR. I ended my contract with them after only 2 months.
They made me come home each weekend even if I wanted to run. They said the reason was because they had customer freight being loaded on the weekends that had to be delivered at the first of the week. I only ran about 2200 miles each week on average. The pay seemed to be good before I started, but the settlements told a different story. I averaged $850 a week for the 2 months I was there. I even got 3 negative settlements while I was there.
I have talked to a couple of Universal and Mason Dixon drivers out on the road and I have read some of the threads on here as well. I would like to hear any serious comments about this company. Good or bad. I will be going for orientation at the first of next week. I would like to be talked into in or talked out of it before I start.
I have been approved already. I have done my drug screen. Got my KW DOT inspected AGAIN today. All that remains is to go to orientation and begin pulling loads.
It worries me that I am from Arkansas and they are not. It also worries me that they don't pay anything for deadhead. Also I've heard that the loads don't pay much more than $1.10 to $1.20 a mile. (I got paid $1.20 for loaded miles and .91 for empty at the company I was with before) It's just I ran about 1/3 of my miles empty with that company and the loads were all under 400 miles. I did a lot of dock sitting waiting to load and unload. Zero loads were drop and hook.
I don't need a ton of money. I have no debt what so ever. My commercial vehicle is paid for as well. I'm just hoping this company will be good for now until the distant future. I do like the idea that it's a non forced agent based company. I like what I have heard about their hometime.
Anyone work for them now? Has worked for them in the past? Let me know your views please.
About to pull my first load for Universal Am Can

I dont work for them but I have a few friends that do. They all have been there along time. They run flat/drop decks and haul heavy alot. If anything ever happened where I am at they would be the first I would call.

Good luck Dave. I would imagine the hardest part will be learning where to roll into being able to get a reload at a good rate and obviously keeping deadhead to a minimum. That'll take time with your financial situation it'll make it easier to have the patience to figure their system out. Don't blame you at all for ditching the previous carrier.

What are you going to be pulling for them? I know they bid the heavy haul loads dirt cheap. When I did heavy haul we couldn't compete with their rates. Good Luck!
trucklyfe Thanks this. -
No complaints here, they settle within 24 hrs, I have been with them for about nine months now, and I am very happy. Keep in mind that this is a agent based company, you have plenty of options, don't settle for the first agent you use unless your completely happy with how they are treating you. There is no other company that I have found (not even land star) that will give you the kind of freedom you will have here. You set the rates that you will run for , if they are not met you move on and book another load from different agent. Always ask if they can do better on a rate if it's not to your liking, you have nothing to loose. If you want p.m. me and i can send you in the right direction on what agents have worked well and steer ya clear of the ones that have not. I pull 53 DV and have have been happy, I don't plan on going anywhere else anytime soon. Oh and they have many many sister companies that you can pull agent loads for as well.

Big John I'll be pulling a 53' dry van. I know Universal does a lot of flat bed freight but I have no idea how to work a flat. I hope it works out. I've not heard a lot of bad stuff about Univeral except for a few moaners that it didn't work out for. They won't blame themselves because it's always easier to put the blame on failure on someone else.
I have my fingers crossed hoping that it works out for me with Universal. I'm ready to settle down with a good company. -
Universal is a company as stated that works on an agent basis, they really do nothing but Take most of your revenue,as a van driver you can expect around 68% of the load. The agents will call you and tell what they have in your area.As far as Universal Goes in orentation they will tell you that they are there for you and the guy who owns this company along with several others owns a bridge in detroit and they will be behind you 110%,That is a load of crap! They can care less about you other then you make them money or not.Are you going to Houston (Lti) for orientation?Be ready to deadhead along ways to get a Trailer because LTI has every one RESERVED for themselves,You are probably going to have to deadhead to pacer's/mason dixon yard in dallas to get one.Watch your paperwork because they will forget Charges for a load and then double up on you the next time to reduce your pay. They are Notorious for doing this if you are buying your plate or insurance,Etc through them. They will use codes on your settelment paperwork and when you call and ask what that deduction means they will shuffle you around to different people and maybe then they can tell you what it means but by that time they have Not made your insurance or plate or whatever payment so you get whacked twice the next time.Make sure you have a Big reserve for your truck on hand,if you breakdown somewhere and need a hand universal has no idea who you are, other then they will send another truck to grab your load for ya at double the rate which you pay back to universal for being so kind as to send a truck. They run Junk trailers mainly, alot need tires or brakes and when you call to replace them they try and get the cheapest thing they can from the merchant. They tried to put used on my flat and i told them like hell,I pay the lease on this and you will put what i want,Didnt sit well with them. You get the Picture?Dont touch there Pocket Book but they sure gonna touch yours!
