My mom was told a few years ago she was diabetic. She was put on the pill. She watches what she eats and takes her meds. Last week the doctor took her off of the meds. He said she was too low on blood sugar and in his opinion she wasn't diabetic any more.

My mom is 80. If she can turn it around then you can too. Just listen to what the doctors are saying.

Condocruiser,i am sorry to hear about your health issues. Please do what the doctor says about your diabetis. That is nothing to mess with.I just lost a friend on Oct 1,he was only 60 years old.And i don't think he took care of himself.I have been retired for 2 years and recently went to renew my medical card and made the mistake of checking the sleep apnea box.I said to hell with it, seeing i probably wont drive a truck again anyway.Good luck.

No offense but her doctor is an idiot. You don't stop being a diabetic. There is no cure.. Either he misdiagnosed her in the first place or her meds were too strong. If she has lost a lot of weight her meds should be adjusted.

Tell her to keep an eye on her BG levels.. At her age any major changes can be fatal.

Have to agree with the poster who said get your A1C checked as this gives you a more accurate picture of your diabetic status over 3 months vs daily BG checks. You should be able to be treated more aggressively with oral meds prior to needing insulin! There are many new generations of oral medications out there today and you are on an older medication. Not having your sleep apnea under control can lead to a change in your diabetic status as the lack of sleep, lack of O2 etc is stressing your body and stress can cause an increase in glucose levels. You need to continue to work with Resp and get your mask adjusted and as another post said check with ENT possibility of surgery.
Diet and exercise sounds simple but a loss of 10% of your body weight can affect a change in your diabetic status. Did you consider a nutritional consult? It is not just the sugar you take in but the carbohydrates !!! An average meal should be approx. 60 carb grams (look at a package label to see carb grams)
Here is wishing you luck and that you get things in control!!

Injun, I think that's what the RT is going to talk with me about, the Bipap. I have no clue, but I'll learn quick. They already told me surgery was out of the question. The last month I been having episodes of altered consciousness while driving. It's not like getting sleepy and pulling over. It's hard to describe, I go from wide awake to a point my vision gets super blurry in just a second, but I can snap out of it in a couple seconds too. It's wierd, I can hear but I can't see. It's them couple seconds that makes me have to stop driving for now before I hurt someone. That and the DOT.

Celticwolf, I have to learn about A1C too. No clue? I have a One Touch tester they download the data from. Last week I had a blood test, but the doctor was talking in general about the results. I'll ask him next time I go in. I been on a one year medical card for the past 2 years. I failed once before because of blood pressure, but the meds fixed that. My o2 was 96 which isn't bad.

Today I dug almost 50 feet for a water line 16" deep to the garage. That's our freezeline. Every bone in the body aches but I'm getting a work out. I been wanting to add water to the garage for awhile. 20 feet to go. Now I'm eating baked chicken, brocolli and corn on the cob. No more Subway, Arby's and McD's for me. :) I'll lose the weight. I weigh 264. I'm shooting for 210 by spring.

I will speak on the Diabetes as that is what I have the most knowledge on..

Over a period of time glucose molecules attached themselves to hemoglobin(red blood cells). They do not detach. Red Blood cells die after 90 days. What the A1C test does is measure the glucose on the hemoglobin. The normal range for a non-diabetic is 5-6%. A diabetic should try to keep that average below 7%. Anything above that shows a diabetic out of control. up to 10% diabetes if treated aggressively can be controlled with diet, exercise and oral meds. Above 8-10% most endocrinologists will prescribe TWO oral meds. Commonly 5-20mgs of Glipizide and up to 2000mg Metformin. Glipizide is taken in the morning with breakfast and the Metformin taken with dinner.

You should be checking your Serum BG levels 2 hours AFTER a meal. Once a day or once a month or any other time is not adequate. to say you are or not under control. Your doctor should check you A1C at the very least once every 6 months. If he isn't have him recommend an endocrinologist.

You were doing good with dinner right up to that corn on the cob. Corn is a starch. Starch is turned into glucose by the body. Normal serving of corn should be no more than 1/4 cup for diabetic.

You don't need to eat like a pauper or eat crappy tasting food, you just need to eat smaller meals more often. Watch the carbs.

Got questions don't be afraid to ask. If I can't answer them I have my endo on speed dial well actually she is on Twitter :biggrin_25523:

I really hate to hear this CC. As already mentioned get the facts, and touch base with the company on coming back when you get it under controll. I have a family history of diabetes (both sides) also and have the possibility of facing the same thing you are sometime in the future. I wish you the best in this and keep us posted on everything.
