I just bought a White/GMC daycab (in New York) and am going to bring down to Florida, fabricate a big pickup bed for it and make a big pickup truck out of it. I am going to register it as a pickup. Will I have to go through weigh stations, since it won't have a trailer behind it?
The truck has 201,000 miles on it, new rubber, has a series 60 Detroit, and looks like new. I paid $3900 for it. Any takes on whether this was a good deal or not?
If I can't get it registered as a pickup before I actually do the work will I need a commercial license? I haven't had one in over 40 years, when I used to haul plywood from Ga to Fla as a 20 year old kid. I'm sure its like riding a bike (you never forget how).
Any help will be greatly appreciated. I own charter and party fishing boats in St Pete, Fl., and this is all new to me.

I have an idea to build RV on trucktor chassis...
Here we need cargo truck licensie if truck weight is over 3500 kg. -
The VIN plate or door jam sticker stating the vehicle's GVWR rating and whether it has airbrakes will determine the registration and whatever endorsements you'll need------
I'm pretty sure you're talking about a class 8 vehicle here though, so yeah, with no license you better go the long way around the coops------
My advice if you're sneakin around it's best done in the dark-----

Here in Florida you can register as a pick up truck, up to 26K lbs ,but you still need a CDL and you have to go thru the scales and you will be subject to everything as the other guy with a truck that he earn his living with.
If it has 201 K miles and it is in good shape, yes you've got a good deal. -

Thanks for the info. I should have researched a little more before I bought it, but it was only $4K. Whats the going rate to pay a driver to drive this thing from NY to Fla for me? I was thinking something like $150-$200 a day plus expenses, giving him a fishing trip on one of my boats and paying his way back home.

semi-pick up... ouh! will run rought, poor weight distribution... typical bobtailing issues! so you need momething kinda ballast about 2 ton in bed... may be it is a good idea remove fifth wheel and install something like a van on it to build semi-camper.
Yeah, I understand you wanna tow big boats, and with trailer truck will run fine!
One advice! add air brakes and ABS on your trailers. it is not so expencive if you'll use used parts but safety is the first. Jack-knife accidents with pick up trucks are dangerouse! They tow trailers with primitive brake system ore w/o brakes

last year my brother's friend hauled wood in car trailer and driving down a hill he applied brake to agressivey and jack knifing with rolling over. Fortunatly speed was low, and no one was heart, car got minor damage, but... it was a hard lesson! -
Look for posts by Freighttrain , I think he went thru the research for using a class 8 for a "toy"
If you plan to pull a specific trailer with it consider Air over hydraulic brakes, exponentially superior to electric -
Where from NY and Where In Florida to be delivered. I wouldn't doing that drive for the right rate as long as the truck is up to DOT spec. I see you have Captain in your sig. Do you work for the airlines?

I have charter and party fishing boats. I bought the truck just to drive for fun. Having a few issues with registration that I am trying to clear up. The dealer I got it from in NY can only give me a temp tag good for NY only, and the Fla DMV wants to see the truck physically before they will register it. I have a friend who owns a yacht transport trucking firm and will try to see if I can get him to put it on one of his lowboy trailers. I know they took a lot of boats from the Ft Lauderdale boat show up north, so hopefully he will have an empty trailer coming back from somewhere close to NYC.
