Hi, I have this "Skipper by Palomar" which was given to my but I'm not 100% sure what it does. I was told it was a 1000 watt range extender. I don't know much about this stuff sorry. I tried google witch no luck. I was wondering if anyone could tell me about it or has a link to a site with some information. I need to know how much power it actually uses from the battery when plugged in. Thanks ahead for the info!

Extinct businesses that used the name:
Palomar Electronics Corp. A manufacturer of CB linear amplifiers in the 1960's and 1970's. Went out of business about 1980.

I did manage to find this tid-bit of information.

What you have is a little ham amp that does work on CB but is not legal.

They may have went out of business but someone I think resurrected the name because you can find what appears to be a newer style of that amp on the internet, particularly eBay....until eBay receives complaints about "illegal CB amps" being sold before pulling the auction, and before said seller receives a ton of hate mail.

All that amp does is boost the signal some, maybe by 1 S unit or so. I looks similar to an old Palomar 300 Elite I once had that drew about 20 amps continuous. Also Palomar is said to be a dirty amp but the one I had was a class AB amp that had an automatic SSB feature in it, so who knows.

Thats a cool little 2 pill (2X1446) you can hit it with a 5 watt
dead key and it will talk clean.

Looks like it needs a good cleaning :biggrin_25525:

I don't know about Palomars being "dirty". I use one pushing my radio and I get compliments on how good mine sounds. I also know other folks who use one and they sound very good. Not splattering the other channels or distorted. It all works if you have a good person to set it up for you.
Linears work despite what the fly on the wall tries to tell you... :yes2557:

In both of my rigs I run a small Palomar 250, strong clean signal and bought 'em about 5 years ago for less than 100 clams.

Palomars are good little amps. Like Curtwayne said, the original Palomar went out of business a few years ago, but theres a company in Mexico that is building AMP's and putting the Palomar name on them, and other names...They don't pull much amps and can be used without much electrical modifications to your ride...Just connect it straight to your battery and don't even think of using the cigarette lighter as a power source...
