Keep the hooked part of the chain facing outward so it doesn't eat into your sidewall.

    whitemountainchain.com
    And CaliO said tirechain.com
Not sure which site and company is better?
Chains are a PITA to put on, but nothing can beat them for traction.
I am almost obsessive about running chains tight. I believe it helps in many ways. I use chain off road mostly, so run the heaviest i can buy.
Im sure many will laugh at me... takes me about 15-20 minutes to chain up. I throw them on and snug up what i can. I roll ahead a couple of tire revolutions and snug up again. I roll ahead again a few more rev's and tighten again. I believe it is time well spent...
This same question was asked last winter, and as i remember there were several very good posts. Cant remember which forum but do a search.
Probably the best advice i can give is to take some time on a nice dry day in a clean, quiet parking lot and practice putting them on. You will be glad you did the first time you have to do it in a snowstorm.
Enough babbling for now, others will have much better advice.:biggrin_25514:

After getting home with my newly purchased (used) W900, I began checking it out in detail. The passenger side box was full of weird looking chain and cable things, and finally figured out what they were as I began removing them from the box. Pulling them out, and dragging them to a hiding place out in my pasture amounts to my experience with sNOw chains.

I'm like you except way more crazy about tightening them. But thats what make em last for years intead of hours. Or minutes, when you are forced to run them on bare asphalt like it happens around Donner. I see rompany drivers run them at 45 mph - thats the same morons who brag about how quick they ut them on. I was never able to get under 34 minutes and clock my chainups every time and try to beat it - with no luck for years though
