Well I got an invite to attend an orientation class today. Roxy called first thing this morning wanting to set a date.. I told her I was still waiting for the dang funding through WIA to come through. I cant believe how long the process is taking. I have a school picked out and a company that is wanting to hire me and I still cant get them off their *****. Sure is frustrating. I am going to see if I can obtain alternate funding tomorrow, but it is doubtful. Soooooo at this rate I will see you guys out there sometime in mid March or later. Once I knuckle down when I can get school started I will call Roxy back and try to set a date at that point I guess. Ohh Well... I feel like I am in the military, Hurry up and wait.... grrrr
Talk to you all later..

Hey smartdriver, hows it goin? I am in Modesto & goin thru the same things you are. I started the whole WIA process a couple months ago thru Stanislaus County Alliance Worknet. After filling out & turning in a bunch of paperwork and taking their tests, last week I finally got the call that said I have been approved for funding. Now I have to go in and sit down with my case worker, pick a school, and fill out some more paper work. I'm hoping I'll finally get school started by the first of the year.
I've spent the last year or so researching which companies I'd want to work for and after reading several of the threads(thanks American Trucker for the VERY detailed thread!) on W/S I've decided to give them first shot, it doesn't hurt that there is a W/S terminal here in Modesto either
Good luck & hang in there. With all the people out of work & trying to get funding right now it can just take a while to get approved. Be sure to call them & check in every so often, I've found thats the best way to find out whats going on. If you wait for them to call you it can take even longer.American-Trucker Thanks this. -
I have been in the process right at about a month now, since I did the orientation class, and I still haven't been assigned a case worker. At what point did you get assigned one? I have done all the classes that the San Joaquin WorkNet wants you to attend, and I have turned in the initial packet of information, but still no case worker. I have called down there several times and the lady at the front desk wont even direct me to anyone to talk to, she just keeps saying I have to wait. That is the part that is pissing me off the most. Anyways, I am still working on alternate funding and I have a pre-hire letter from W/S, in fact Roxy(a recruiter) wants to schedule my orientation class, however I told her that will have to wait untill I find out when I am starting class.. I am still trying other methods of getting the money, but it is not looking good. So at the rate things are going it will be March before I can get back to work.... And that really pisses me off... anyways enough of my sob story, thanks for the info on the WIA process, that is actually more information than I have been able to get from WorkNet... Hope things go well for you and good luck. -
I didn't get a case worker until I took the workeys assessment tests. Have you taken those yet? After I took those they assigned me a case worker. Thats who I called to get my scores for workkeys tests. When I called to get my scores I also scheduled my first sit down with her. I had to give her a current copy of my resume, copy of my DMV MVR, and a few other things. We then talked about what I wanted ie. job placement assistance or job training. I told her I wanted to go to CDL school and she said ok and that it will take 3 to 6 weeks to either get approved or denied for funding for that. I just got the call(she left me a voicemail) last week that I had been approved. I have been playing phone tag with her since then trying to set up my next appointment, hoping to get a call from her tomorrow. It usually takes a couple days for her to get back to me. At my next appointment we will sit down and discuss what schools they will pay for, which companies I am looking to work for, how soon I want to get started, and I think I will get yet another case worker for the rest of the worknet stuff.
I just filled out my application of W/S today so I hope they will call me in the next day or two and let me know if I am W/S material lol. -
I called the recruiting number and got ahold of Roxy and talked to her for a bit. She asked me to go ahead and fill out the application. So I farted around the house for about an hour then filled it out and an hour and a half later she called me back. She had already forgotten that we had talked earlier that morning, so it only took them that long to respond to the application. When I reminded her she was like oh yeah I remember now. That was on Monday of last week, then this Monday she called me again wanting to schedule orientation... So that is what got me to trying to find alternate funding for school.. But it isn't going so well... Anyways good luck on getting on with them... they seem like a good company.thePUNISHER Thanks this.

Sandy called me this morning. She gave me the run down & the list of schools in my area that are acceptable to W&S. She answered most of my questions before I even had a chance to ask them lol. She also sent me an email with the driver benefits and school grad program info. She was really nice. I am really starting to look forward to this. Now if only my case worker would call me with an appointment time so I can get into school a.s.a.p.!! I hope I get started soon.

At the very least you could go with a company that pays for training. Good luck!

I would rather wait the 3 months for the WIA process than be tethered to a company for 2 years or more.. Anyways Thanks for the advice though.
