Hello, I am looking at getting into driving OTR. I did it a few months in 05. I ran for Swift. I know its not the best but it did pay my bills at the time. I will need a company that will retrain or refresh my driving been outside the usa a few years. I have contacted a few companies they all say i need to retrain. This is not a problem. The websights say about the same thing. I have been looking at the blogs seen some of the companies and not seen anything on others. Any advice on checking out companies or should i just list them and get opinions?

Determine what your particular needs are (I recommend a written list), then research the company's website, review forum contents (with a grain of salt), talk to drivers, and move toward the company that is closest to meeting your needs. There is a lot of good data regarding questions to ask recruiters, etc. on this forum. A lot of reading and "weeding," but it's a good starting place. Good luck!

What CalmSea said! Stay away from the mega-carriers. Aim for the companies that do the least amount of advertising. The harder it is to get hired on with someone the more worth they are working for. Good luck!

I agree with chompi. I am out on a rotator cuff injury and should be good to go back to work in Jan. I am looking at a company that does not advertise and they pay pretty good.

The FMCSA SafaStat can tell you alot. You can see if the safety department is going a good job. Look at the tickets the drives get. Are the most of them for log book violations or are they for truck items. If they are for truck items that can mean a few things. The drivers are being pushed hard or the company doesn't want the truck in the shop to fix the problems or the drivers just don't care. Maybe they're not trained well enough to know what works on a truck. Knowing the equipment is a must. You can look in the history part and see if they keep a steady number of drivers or are they firing one year then hiring the next. The drivers go along with the number of power units. Check it out you'll see there's tons of information that just might bring a question or two.
