There are tons of threads on this forum about leasing. Don't be lazy.
Research them and learn.Rerun8963 Thanks this. -
There are probably less than 10 drivers on this entire site that have completed a lease pruchase and walked away with the truck although the JCT drivers will tell you they are on the fast track to stardom in trucking....
Do yourself a favor and buy a truck if you want your own don't lease from a bottom feeder, you've been warned.. -
Do a search at the top of the page on leasing. You will get all the horror stories you can handle. Do do it! Leasing is a scam! You will most likely fail and work for little or no money.

So what if the lease lets you turn in the equipment w/o penalty? If you have it looked over by an attorney what's the risk? If things don't work out? If you are experienced to the point that you are not learning how to drive initially while learning how to become an O/O I do not see a problem if the preview of the contract checks out. If however you are having trouble turning in the basic paperwork a driver has to contend with then you will not be able to keep up with truck records.

ok here is the nitty gritty.
A company x wants trucks to lease. They contact say Freightliner or Kenworth and tell them they want 200 trucks to lease. But they only want maybe 20 trucks a month. The truck supplier agrees to lease said trucks to X for $800 a week.
You come along all nice and green, and go through the X companies doctorination and sell you on the idea of leasing the truck. Your fee is approximately $1154 a month.
Why the difference? Your paying for the over head of the trucks not off the line yet. Even if the trucks were off the line, you would still be paying the flat fee.
The flat fee allows companies to have the money when things go wrong (drivers realise they cant afford the lease and dont have the miles to make a profit).
So what happens? You quit the bottom feeder and come here to say what a terrible company they are because you couldnt make it as a trucker.
You wont be the first nor the last. Just dont expect me to want to read about your terrible time, been there done it, cept I no longer read those threads. I have to admit it is a interesting deal.
You want to verify it? Ask anyone here that is on a lease deal how much they are paying and for what. If it is a freightliner, find your nearest selecttruck dealer and ask them what the company was being charged for that truck. The average truck shows up to these resale yards with a half million miles.
The average truck is expected to get 10 thousand miles a month or at least 100,000 per year. A 3 year lease will be a truck with 300-345 thousand miles. These numbers are only what the company expects.
Oh by the way. The X company will start you out with 2500 miles per week. If you fall in line and do those miles you will be guaranteed the miles. But lets say you goof off and do only 2200 miles. The company has a policy that says if you cant turn the miles to give the good loads to the drivers who can. Eventually you wont have the miles to pay the lease and quit. That truck will incur a recovery fee and or a expensive detail fee so they can offer it to the next starry eyed green driver with aspirations of their own truck.scottied67 Thanks this. -
I would also recommend a team to increase your chances of success. There are thousands of trucking companies ripping drivers off continuously and for every company I ever left for the same reason there are thousands left still picking masters cotton that is how these companies make their money. That does not keep people from driving and staying in the business. Find a niche.

One bad thing is the weekly payments instead of monthly. One bad week or go home and you are behind. Once behind you have a very hard time trying to catch up.
You also are trapped with that company if you plan on paying it off. The reason so many companies offer a lease now is they found a way to attract a driver, lower their operating expenses and the odds are they'll get the truck back before it's over. Win, win for them.
There are a very few success stories, but the majority of them are negative to the driver. Being a company driver with benefits is a much safer option.
