When I hear stories about the idiots talking on the cb, I always imagine they look like Mr. Banjo player and dancing dad:

I ....naturally.... imagine myself as Burt Reynolds...

This is a very big newbie mistake. You absolutely need a CB. I saw a newbie driving down the road with his landing gear down tearing up the highway, and the trailer. Well when we all tried to tell him on the radio guess what, he didn't have one. How the hell are you supposed to know what's going on without a CB? What if you were doing 65 down the interstate and you come up over the top of that icy hill and traffic is stopped? If you had a CB you could have stopped instead of plowing through that bus full of kids! I cannot tell you how many times its saved my skin! Drivers in the opposite direction can notify you of not just dangerous situations but cops, scales, weather, traffic, if there's any parking, etc.... Plus a lot of shipper/receivers have a locked gate and communicate by CB. They let you know when you are done getting loaded and unloaded too. Sure there are a lot of goobers on there talking crap all the time. You just keep it turned down and keep your distance or put out close by. It's funny, for those of you who don't have a radio when you finally do get one you will be amazed at what's going on out there. It will seem as if you were deaf.

There's no doubt you can get useful information over the radio but you'll get more garbage than good. So you need to use it as a tool. For many years my company would not allow cb's in the truck. They said they did not want the driver messing with the wires and such. (we're hauling gasoline). Then the guys up in Seattle convince the company they were a safety tool and the company made it possible but it had to be installed by the mech.

When I come off the highway and go onto the surface streets all radios either go off or down real low. I need to hear what is going on because you can be going down a road and barely hear the emergency vehicle with the siren on.

You need to use common sense on the cb. I thought it was very cool to just talk late at night in clear plain language to keep the sleep away. I got to know more friends that way than someone getting on the radio and every mile saying "hey west bound you seen any smokies out here" It's just a tool where you can make friends and it can safe you life at times if the net is not jammed up with "good buddies".

You talk about crap on the cb. As a woman driving truck we hear more stupid comments on it. I still run with my cb Ive just learned to ignore the stupid stuff. Why do some guys automatically think that female drivers are fair game? If You cant be civil then dont talk to me. And if your not man enough to say it to my face then dont say it. NOw I dont look for trouble and dont want any, but please give me a break, I'm out there to do a job just like You men.
