I just did a road test (got the job) in a FL Columbia with a Detroit/13spd. My truck for the last 7+ months has been a KW W900 C15, 13spd with approx 900k miles. After completing the road test, the owners son said the tester commented that I had trouble shifting. I know that the gearbox was MUCH tighter than in my truck and you have to shift at 1700 vs 1500 for the Cat. There were a few ham fisted shifts + plus I was nervous about having someone assessing my driving.
Do you long time drivers (I have 2 years) ever scratch gears in an unfamiliar truck?
You driving veterans ever have bad shifting days?

yeah....and I've heard O/O's in the truck stops scratch 'em to. it happens. and I agree that the shift pattern on the columbia's is tighter than a KW's.

Heck, sometimes I scratch gears in MY OWN truck. Most of the time, they just "snick" right in, but sometimes.... "Grrrrrrrrrr".

Flying Dutchman Thanks this. -
It's somewhat common to "feel out" a truck you are first driving, right? And the tester should know this, however, as you get more experience, you should be able to get into just about any truck and drive it like it's yours.
Wargames Thanks this. -
The first 5 min of the day and then after 7 hours of metro driving I seem to get worse.

Yes I still buzz those gears occasionally and with a road test I tend to be nervous. I just try to forget there is another person in the rig and it keeps the grrrs to a minimum.
Have a joyous Christmas and New Year!
Wargames and rocknroll nik Thank this. -
I scatch and miss when I start getting tired but when I'm wide eyed and bushy tailed I haven't had any issue's except a couple of times at stop light's facing up step inclines maxed out in weight and taffic out the wazoo behind me and a 10 second green light/10 minute red with the clutch wearing my knee out.
I do find it to be BS that companies test you in a truck that's well, (I'll leave the saying to your imagination) and expect you to be almost perfect without getting a chance to get used to it for a few minutes first before actually getting graded. -
Hell ya! especially with these new electronic, no throttle response POS engines. They affect the shifting more than any thing.

Only when I have someone with.
