I have enjoyed using the 700, it is a terrific tool. However.... there are three primary design issues which make the unit an aggrevation.
1. The processor used in the unit is borderline sufficient to the point of anemia. This isn't just an algorithm issue, it is the lack of ability of the processor to do all of the needed calculations within a time-frame that is reasonable. My gosh, at least half-a-dozen times, in the two months I have owned the unit, I have had to wait for as long as 5 minutes+ for a recalculation to occur during needed detours while on the move, effectively requiring me to stop and wait, and then forego the 700 altogether in favor of directions from the locals. Many other times, route recalculations simply could not be made while on the move. As an example... I would have already driven past an intersection identified by the 700 as the one to turn onto, before the 700 could provide a navigation solution. I'm talking about intersections that might be two or three minutes of driving away from the point I hit the 'recalculation' icon. I won't even go into detail on the length of time calculations sometimes take when I'm sitting still and entering in a new route when getting a new pre-plan. A BEFFIER PROCESSOR IS NEEDED, no ifs, ands, or buts.
2. The power cord. I hate that damnable usb power cord. It is not a reliable design for the rough roads and the bumping around that takes place in the tractor, nor were usb inputs ever imagined for such hard use. USB ports were designed as a communications port, and were coincidentally able to be used for power applications. I would bet that many of the 'loose' usb port defects in these units are due to this issue. Rand MUST add a dedicated power input with a reliable rca-style jack.
3. The screen is not bright enough to overcome reflected glare in bright sunlight. I'm not talking about direct sunlight on the screen, either. I'm talking about reflected sunlight which bounces around the cab, and off of me, and then hits the screen.
4. This isn't a design issue, per se, but a user issue. I want to see the addition of a menu option at every menu and sub-menu layer which allows me to get directly back to the map screen rather than having to hit the "back button" to escape the many menu layers until I can hit the "map" icon.
5. Another user-software issue is the volume control. Provide more 'steps' to the volume selection. At level two, the volume is a bit too soft to be reliably useful. However, level three is waaaay too loud to be comfortable. In my mind, a ten step attenuation of the volume would make a useable, and useful, difference.
I understand that the three design issues would require Rand to build a new generation of boxes, but I've got to say that such is a better choice than continuing to build, what I see, are significant flaws.
Let me repeat my enthusiasm for the 700, it is a very good product, and I don't see anything else that I want to replace it with. But I'll tell you, I would buy a new 700 in a split second if it incorporated the design changes that I mentioned.
I haven't yet decided that I have a love-hate relationship with the 700, but, from my perspective, it is still the best GPS unit available.
Mark Kling Thanks this. -
i havent had any problems with my usb power supply yet. i have my unit mounted on the dash and my cord ran into my power port right under my console. perhaps its where u have ur unit mounted at.
i had the hitting the back button problem too until i notices the globe in the right corner which is on almost every menu which will take u to the map in 2 buttons.
i agree with the processor issue. if the processor cant be upgraded then the algorithm needs to be changed to better use what processing power it has available at any given time. code can always be made better. i learned that from 4 years of beta testing addons for WoW.
i actually think the volume on my unit is kinda low. im sure it varies from truck to truck as a older truck has less insulation and will be noisier then a brand new truck but with me running 65 down the highway and the radio on i have to always watch the unit to make sure i dont miss a turn as i will not always hear the voice commands.
i love my 700 and wouldn't trade it for anything. although lately it has been sending me on really screwed up routes. i was in illinois at a shipper and had to get to i74 which i could see from where i was sitting. i passed the entrance to the interstate as i was following the unit. it sent me clear upstate on il-6 back to the entrance on i-74. i still cannot figure out why it did that. i had it set to manual recalculations if it matters but have since changed it back to auto as it seemed to give me weird routes when i went to manual.
i cant wait for the map updates as i think a lot of the problems will be alleviated when that update occurs. all in all i am very very happy with the unit and would be absolutely lost without it as the directions i get from my dispatch are at time the worst things ever written.
ok i do have one problem with it. i drive teams and doing so we burn through the hours really fast and this thing is always telling me my driving day driving week and end of week are up when ever i restart the unit. is there a way to shut the hours off? -
Set the hours to off duty and ignore it.

Well now i got a second unit and now the new one will not update and when i took off the prited protecter screen cover out of the box it let a bunch of glue on the screen. Is there a way to get one of these things that dont have problems? I need to get this thing to update any ideals on how to get this done i plug it to the computer and nothing tried to reset tried to turn on than plug in i tried verything i csn think of
-
dean what os r u on? what kind of computer r u on? laptop, netbook, dekstop? is the unit fully charged? have u tried different usb cables? different port on the computer?
mine had glue on it too but i just rubbed my hand over the screen and the glue came right off.
