I could use some advice here from someone that has had similar problems and those with very good knowledge. I had to replace the engine some years ago and they put a 400 Cummins in the truck. It has used oil but not this much. The increase of use of oil is pretty alarming. I do not see an increase of exhaust compared to normal.
I have read there could be other reasons other than piston rings. Talked with one mechanic who has his own shop and he didn`t want to commit to any specific thing except he said it could be the turbo then didn`t seem to want to talk much about it. What would cause such a quick increase use of oil ? The engine runs fine !!
Burning oil increasing a lot

well there are only a few ways to lose oil. Got any major noticeable leaks? Puddles underneath where you park? What's the blowby tube and area look like. If all of these are OK then it's out the stack.
-
How much is a lot? Gallon a day?
-
No leaks that I can tell. It is a dump truck so I work local however I`ve been hauling loads from outside of town and running the engine harder. It used 4 gallons the last 2 weeks.
Les2 Thanks this. -
How many miles on this engine, how long since servicing?Could be several causes. Was this a gradual increase or all at once? Are you getting oil thru your air compressor ? Could be a cracked oilring, valve guides, injector seals just to name a few.
-
The miles are debatable, they told me 100 k but that shop will never see any business from me and I felt this way long before this problem. I service it regularly. It has been gradual increase and I did have a vlave leaking air under the drivers side dash that was spewing a little bit of oil out. It`s visible. Right after they put the engine in it was obvious the injector seals had to be replaced, then an injector dropped and messed the top side up. No problems then excpet they left one belt off a pully and broke a bunch of other belts.

Could be the seal in the turbo, 400 Cummins was famous for that. Pull the intake hose off the front and look for residue on the intake impellor. Check the air cleaner too, it may be plugging up, especially on a dumper.

Thanks to you all. I have a much better idea of what I am dealing with now.

Turbo is first thing I would check. Also drain air tanks, and look for oil residue. I would suspect a possible broken ring. Let us know what you find.

This week was better. I`ve been running at lower RPM`s and keeping my foot out of the throttle picking up speed. The heavy oil usage appears to be one of the two or both.
