i ALWAYS buy extended warranties on my vehicles. what you might try and do is talk them down on the price for the 2 year plan....like maybe (if you can) pay cash for that, rather than to roll it into the overall cost of the truck....

look at the mileage of both trucks. now as we all know, chances are GOOD you'll make it to 1 million miles.....

but what if you don't, what if at say 750,000 miles the block cracks or the cylinder head cracks.....you got the money to fix that, and then the down time on top of that...??

used vehicles are a bigger gamble i think than a brand new one could ever be. find out too if the extended warranty is "transferable" if you sell the truck in a year or two....now, you'd be giving THAT owner some piece of mind as well, and you can re-coup your money spent on buying the warranty.

I drive a different truck every night. A little game I play to amuse myself is, drive it half the night before I even look at the odometer. You wouldn't believe how little it matters. Usually, it all depends on who has driven the truck. A 500k mile truck sometimes feels way worse than a million miler. Sometimes I'm shocked when I look!! Every truck is different, test drive, test drive, test drive

i spoke with national truck protection today, they quoted me $5000 for the same coverage as selectrucks, and recommended the selectrucks plan as it is a freightliner plan

one of my friends bought a used truck from an individual, no warranty, 400 miles out on its first trip, & it throws a rod, $13,000 & over a month of down town he was back running. he had paper work since new, including an inframe rebuild under 300k before he bought it. he gambled & lost.most people dont have that bad of luck, he unfortunately did.

as said, its a gamble....nothing may ever go wrong......

if you CAN AFFORD repairs after the purchase then do not buy the warranty.

but if you are basically "scrimping and saving" just to buy this truck and it breaks down, you're screwed....

you can "roll" the cost of the warranty into the truck purchase (i would believe)......

    peace of mind....??

or your mind going to pieces when you need a major repair...????

IF you have the extra $3k in hand put it in the bank and keep it for repairs.

A used truck warranty is a big profit center for the dealer.... I used to get a 30% commission when I sold one at the Ford store I worked at...

If you can do some of your own work on your truck you can save more in repairs than you'd spend on a major repair... have a dyno report and oil analysis done to see the real condition of the engine. If it's good forget the warranty. If it's bad, buy a different truck.

those warranty's are just financing a problem that may, or may not happen. Either way you pay for it. I'd follow Krooser's advise, or have an emergency credit card, atleast you don't have to fight over what's covered and what's not

Even though must people avoid used truck warranties, I decided to purchase the Select Truck warranty upon my truck purchase. I bought the extended 1 yrs/3yrs for about $2800. Bought the truck in March 2010. Since the truck has an EGR engine its been to the dealer 6 times for various issues: faulty vpod replaced 4 times, once for replacement of turbo cooler and last time for turbo replacement. Combined total cost in excess of $10k...I didn't pay a cent. In my opinion the initial investment has paid for itself. Now, it wasn't easy to get all the work done. Make sure you are fully aware of coverages and document yourself. I'm new in the trucking business and felt I needed the backbone of a warranty for piece of mind and future cash outlay. My truck also has a automatic transmission which is fully covered for 1 yrs 100k miles. After the turbo replacement the truck is running in excellent conditions...knock on wood. The only piece of additional advice I can give as a rookie...save 5 to 10 % of gross income for future major repairs and maint.
