Yes, you are mising something. There is a lot more responsibility running a temperature sensitive load. Some people are simply not responsible enough to add another chore to their driving job. So it would be too complicated for them to attempt to haul reefer loads, I think. Maybe not for you, but others, yes.
There are drivers, both new and old, who would neglect to watch what was going on with the unit. I see hands run their trucks out of fuel, with a fuel gauge right in front of them.Think those people will watch a tank under the trailer?
Ever had a unit freeze up from no defrost cycle ? Can go into heating mode, and that can cost a load. It happens, you have to pay attention. Not everyone does.
Loading a reefer can be different. With produce, you must insure the stacking in the trailer is such that good air ventilation is maintained. No air circulation and you buy the load.
Dealing with produce buyers can be difficult. You do not re-make appointments. If you are late, your freight pay will be reduced. And we all know how some truckers are about being on time.
Perhaps our definition of complicated differs. It ain't rocket science to pull refrigerated freight, but it is harder, more demanding, and requires more attention. You simply cannot load it and forget it. -
Looking at Stevens, Prime, or Central Refrigerated to start in Feb 11. If there is a problem with your load in pulling refrigerated freight does the company charge you for the load? Not sure how that works. Details from an actual Refrigerated Driver please.Last edited: Dec 20, 2010

You wont be charged for the load if youve done everything that you have been asked to do to insure the safe and secure delivery of that product,i.e securing the load properly, doing your check calls, monitoring the correct operation of your reefer unit, proper temps etc. Ive ran refrigerated for the last 3 years and never had anything close to a claim. Why because I do what needs to be done to prevent that.revslev Thanks this.

Hey dude why are you going to Stevens
-
Are you really going to stevens after all theses posts.

what percent of trucks on the road are dry van compared to refer?
is it like for every 2 dry van trucks there is 1 reefer?
i know in the grocrey store maybe 25 percent of the store is refrigerated. -
WTF........I don`t believe that, must be asking for punishment gives me nightmares lol -
YOU have no clue....
There are just as many pages with positive, and Stevens is compliant with FMCSA... Makes the job of driver easier. We do not have that big red bullseye when we pull into the scales... which is very rarely with our score. -
Hello, I was wondering if you make it through the training and would still recommend any one going there for training and to work for Stevens thanks.
