I recently purchased a new radio because my old one was starting to cut out all the time. After much deliberation, I chose the Cobra 50th Anniversary Edition. It's an attractive radio and seems to work very well when I need it to.
However... (isn't there always one of these?)
Many times, I have the radio turned off simply because I don't feel like listening to the assorted chatter. Occasionally, even with the switch on the off position, the radio will turn itself on full blast for a second and blare out a phrase from the weather channel. Scares the crap out of me when it does this. It's kind of unpredictable...just does it when it feels like it, then it shuts off. Mind you, I had it switched off in the first place. Otherwise, it seems to be a good radio.
I've been considering removal of the weather channel chip. I never use it on the CB anyway. I get those stations on my AM/FM radio.
Ideas as to why it's doing this? Thanks!

It may be a signal that preceeds the broadcast. I know the weather radio in my office does it.

I heard once that the weather alerts come through on the radio even when it is turned off, unless no power is supplied, in other words, unpplugged or hooked to a switched wire with the switch turned off.If you use a lighter plug cord you could unplug it easily.
I've always avoided weather channel CB combinations, my 29 Chrome doesn't have weather channels. I prefer it in the dash like you do. -
As long as you have a supplied power source connected to the radio...the weather alerts will chime in when you pass through the alert zone. The radios functions are pre-wired for this...as a way of insuring that a severe weather alert will be heard even if the radio is "switched" to the "off" position.

I think that would scare the crap out of me too. Im glad my radio's have never done that.

that is why so many buy the radios without the weather system...or take out the programming chip. Believe it or not, you can get used to it.annettecj Thanks this.

Sounds like a cool feature to me. Or your radio is actually haunted, and is trying to pass a message from the GrEaT bEyOnD...
annettecj, otherhalftw and Injun Thank this. -
wow---you could have a lot of fun with that---if you had a canned msg to come up instead of the weather
can you imagine driving along--all of a sudden your radio says" brains, brains,i want to eat your brains"
umm wait-- i hear worse than that anywaysannettecj Thanks this. -
And really,How many brains out there would be worth snackin on??

I'm pretty sure my Uniden PC68LTW gave you the option of turning off the weather warning by switching the knob on the weather bands in the "off" position. I'd be willing to guess your Cobra has a similar feature.
otherhalftw Thanks this.
