Geoffrey,
Seeing how you are only 18, I would recommend you at least obtain a high school diploma first. Many jobs would like to see this when you fill out an application for work. So, get the diploma first before immigrating. I'm not sure a truck company would hire you at your age and no experience, so kick back and finish high school first.

hey dan, i finished my apprenticeship as a management assistant in freight forwarding and logistic services this year. i'm 23 but non-experienced driver. i'm going to canada in march 2011 for an work and travel. what do u think about my chances to get into the industry?

Your coming from the wrong country to be greeted with open ARMS by the Canadian Goverment in ways of assisting you.
But depending on where you are planning on settling there are quite a few companies that hire from Europe.
Check out ERB Transport they have a good reputation and offer a sort of apprenticeship to new drivers. -
I don't think ERB does the government grant thing for overseas hires. They are too good. It is tough to get in there. I have a buddy who works for them and he could get me in, really only because I know someone.
Sadly, most of the companies hiring overseas are all of Canada's bottom feeders. I would recommend you apply to as many as you can anyway. You may get lucky and get in to a decent company to start with. -
http://erbgroup.webuiltthat.com/careers_index.php seems they need a few more drivers than your friend can supply.

from what i hear erb is pretty good--pay and extrs's are up there--but you have to watch your back there
-
Yes, Erb needs drivers. They do not take any old new driver though. They are a good company, not a lot of turnover. Lots of new business and lanes which is why they need more drivers.
I may think of going to them if a position opens up close to me. -
Have 2 brother in laws who work for the US Div , 1 an O/O the other a company driver

Hello Nillz,
I don't know all of your background. I'm sure your dock experience will be helpful in getting a better job. It's not that hard to get a truck driving job if that's your goal. In truck driving there are truck companies that will hire without much experience. Then, there are the quality truck driving jobs that have higher expectations from a driver. They usually like you to have at least two years of OTR experience. Having a diploma helps to show you can at least read and write. Many years ago I started out by working the docks. Afterward, the employer agreed to pay for a truck driving school if I agreed to drive for him for a minimum of one year. (Truck driving schools can be expensive). Other companies will train you through their own drivers. Sounds like you will soon be driving. Good luck.
