To the original poster, I would prepare for it to get worse. January is the slowest month for the trucking industry. With that being said, I think there is other factors involved here. Either your husband pee'd off the dispatcher or refused a load or something or the dispatcher sucks. Now also, what has he been typically averaging? Was this just one bad week because that happens from time to time. Whatever the case tell him to remain cool and collective when talking to dispatch otherwise it could get worse. Mega-carriers are famous for sweating out drivers. They won't fire them sometimes they will just not give them miles until they quit.

this is definatley the slow time in the biz..the best thing to do is deal with it as best as possible. things will turn around here by mid feb...also it dosnt hurt to have a good relationship with your dm..i worked for knight out of the indy terminal and had 2 great dispatchers..never refuse a load and thank them at the end of the week for all their hard work..believe me it pays off too kiss a little #####... you rely on that person for you and your familys living..take care be safe and have a happy new year:)

No one has questioned whether or not this schlub is eating fast food in truck stops every night, buying all kinds of neat little gadgets etc.....All with cash advances. Is that a possibility? Buy Einstein a cooler and stock it for him on the rare occasion that he his home, or maybe remind him that lots of Wal-Marts have truck parking, allot him a budget and send him to the store for groceries on Friday night while allowing him maybe one visit to the buffet per-week. A budget and restricting road expenses go along way toward making a good living.

Why does your husband stay there?
Why would you expect an OTR driver to be home for christmas?

Christmas is not just a gimme, gimme; what'd I get holiday. For a lot of us its aligned with the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. Yes we like to exchange gifts, but more importantly we get a little more focused on what really is important for our lives with our God, family, church & community.

I totally agree, but if you want to be home for Christmas why be an OTR driver? The odds are just not in the drivers favor.

How are you guys not planning on being home for the Holidays? Does anyone not give their dispatchers advanced notice of when they want to take time off with repeated reminders anymore? Or is everyone quick to submit to whatever crap is thrown at them? I've never had a problem taking time off during any holiday. Last year I got home for Christmas. This year I got home for Christmas and turned my truck back into the company.

To the OP: why is your husband still at Knight if he isn't making enough money? There are other better companies out there. And don't listen to the folks who claim that all truck companies are the same. They obviously have no clue as far as what they're talking about. Apparently they worked at every single company; a bunch of clueless wise people.

We stayed out on Christmas, because we wanted to. Our DM later asked us to
confirm that we wanted to work Christmas, because so many drivers were committing to working and then changing their minds, and we confirmed it. We received plenty of loads to keep us going over the holiday weekend, and a nice bonus for working Xmas. The purpose of the holiday, to me, is to make money.

We did make it home for New Year's Eve, because the purpose of New Year's Eve is to get drunk and party, which is much more interesting, to me, than Jesus.
