When buying an amp, weigh the cost of power. For every pound you want to gain on the other person's meter, you have to double the power. The more you want to double your power the more wattage you need and it can be costly. Watts to make it worth it. Start at 5 watts 10 20 40 80 160 320 640 1280 2560 5120

you have to quadriple your output power to gain 1 s-unit on the recieving stations meter.....

The bigger the amplifier you go with the more problems you run into and the harder it is to get it
to work properly.....The best improvement ive seen over a barefoot radio for the money is a Texas Star
MOD-V its a single 2SC-2290 Transistor amplifier....things are tough ive given them a beaten and they
keep tickin....just my .02 cents......I would personnally go with a Davemade single 2290 amp if i were buying
but the Texas Star maybe a little easier to locate for some

That's what I was thinking....if I'm not mistaking, at 16 watts swing if you want to jump one S unit on the receiving end's meter, you need 64 watts of power and if you want to jump 2 S units on the receiver's meter you need to have 256 watts....am I right?

Yeah, but to hear the super truckers tell it,your still a little mudduck with a small radio because your getting "your lips cut off by big radios" ever time you key up. Remember,it dont mean a thing if you ain't got that swing!

You know how it works,if the super truckers dont see their meter swing like a windshield wiper, dont have to turn their mike gain back more than half way to keep from squealing or dont bleed all over not only their own stereo but all 40 channels ( that's a really big radio you know!) to boot and if they dont spend at least $75.00 for those "big radio" mods ( that have about $5.00 worth of parts in em ) they ain't happy.......
....no matter how bad it sounds they got to have that swing and they will pay out the ### to get it!!!

    Back many moons ago ......

The industry set a standard of S9 = 100 UV and "S" meters were to work on this standard .........

SO to keep thing in some order they also used a rise of fall on 6 DB ( power X4 ) for each "S" unit .......

The problem is very few meters work this well .....
