I don't understand where drivers would think that hotel, travel, food, CDL license fees and training would be free and not paid back. This ain't the government.
Corporal_Clegg Thanks this. -
Anybody who goes to any training company that does not ask questions, multiple times, and understand the answer, and understands the contract they are signing are a fool. There is no such thing as free training, guaranteed job.
Most people who go to stevens, see the $50,000 ads, which no one will make in the first year, don't understand they will NEVER be home, and will work when Stevens says. They will go to places they don't want to go, they will set in the meat patch for a day or two, and do not realize just how regulated and controlled a truck driver is.
Due to lawyers and insurance companies, a single owner operator can no longer train a new driver, like years ago. Too much CYA in today's litigious society of have to blame someone else for ones own mistakes.
Some businessmen have moved to fill this section of trucking, and that is Stevens business model. Many companies begin to struggle and fail when the children take over, as they do not have the knowledge or the drive the parents did that started the company. Stevens is at the changing stage.
One needs to understand what they are starting when they apply to be a truck driver. One needs to do their own research, find a company that they can get the training they require, and one that they can live by the contract they sign.
Rah Rah Rah, swish bang boom....
Kwaione, drvrtech77 and Corporal_Clegg Thank this. -
OK, A good bit of this is false or outdated info.

This repayment stuff is true if you're going to school at Stevens' yard in Mesquite from other state...if you went to school in one of their other school locations in Texas (such as HCC in Houston) the only thing to pay back will be the physical exam taken in Houston prior to the CDL driving test.
I must state that Stevens is on the level (once one separate facts from fiction).
Did not meet any person at their yard that wasn't pleasant (except for other prospective solo drivers).
My beef is that if you have a decent proposition, why the lies and deceptions?
They're not needed...why giving the impression that one could, as a company solo driver, get to the $100k income level driving up to 11hrs per day? It is impossible to accomplish this if one takes into consideration waiting times to load/unload, mandatory DOT rest times, traffic conditions (such as the northern highways in this time of the year).
Now, there aren't that many outfits that would give a broke, unemployed, inexperienced individual the opportunity to lease his own 18 wheeler within 12 months of starting out like Stevens do.
That there are strings attached to this type of situation, so what? Being in charge means one must make compromises but always plan with the end in mind. After the initial lease is up, if one played the cards right, should have enough to put a down payment and buy the rig that you were just leasing. Now you're an owner, and daddio your weekly payment just got reduced about 50%. Since you had been leasing, your credit is good.
Granted, there'll be sacrifices and long days but for God's sake, don't sugar coat them. It doesn't have to so...the opportunity speaks for itself. If my schedule is going to be 14-18 hour days, say so. That means your weekly pay should average about $2/hr. Say so...
If I'm lead to believe that it only takes is hard work and consistency (read driving ad nausea um) and one can see $100k/yr after 18 months but reality is otherwise, then one is left with a very bitter taste.
Don't need to be.
For the guys who are Stevens true blue in this board to come out and denigrate folks who got in the truck and then dropped off, you can't really believe that these individuals were less than motivated to make it...
Considering the attrition at the schools (in my class we started out 24 and 6 got to make it to the yard and we were all with trainers by Saturday of same week -8 days), it takes more than just wishful thinking to actually load ones' gear into a trainers' truck. A person one just met about 15 minutes prior to (or in my case met at a loading dock after being dropped of by the taxi).
Granted one talks of an event based on one's experience in there. If you're experience in the same event is the opposite, does my opinion/thoughts about it are of any less value than yours? Just because they differ, it does not mean, as an person, you're less/more than I. It just means we have different ideas/opinions.TLeaHeart, Dryver and Corporal_Clegg Thank this. -
Every company has its good & bad points. As TleaHeart said it well.

I'll add my two cents worth here.
I've been with Stevens just short of three years.
I am an alliance driver, but was a company driver for the first two years.
Stevens has been up front and honest with me from the start. They pay everything they say they will, pay it on time and have never tried to beat me out of a fair charge.
they have a lot of rules, but those rules make things run safer and smoother. Keep in mind it's a training company. They take people that didn't know the difference between a truck and a wheel barrow and make drivers out of them.
As with any training company, there are plenty of failures. Those typically are the ones that are posting negative posts here.
As with any company, there are good drivers that have left because they didn't mesh well with the company.
Here is what I can guarantee you, tho:
If you complete Stevens training, drive for them two years and keep your nose clean, you will be sought after by many good companies that hire ONLY experienced drivers. Those are the companies that pay more, have less rules (they expect you to be self directed and disciplined), and aren't advertising all the time for drivers.
Stevens is a great place to start, to train, and for some of us, a great place to work.flyingswine, likmold and Dryver Thank this. -
