Very Sad to hear this, and anytime a fellow Driver looses a life out here doing his/her job....
that truck stop happens to be a favorite stop of mine, big, plenty of space to back big faclilty, always clean, and nice people, and i enjoy leaving and reading the big banner that hangs on the wall by Mcd's that says " thank your pro. drivers, have a safe trip" the one bad thing is that i notice when i stay their, is that trucks do speed through that lot because of the open space in the driveway.....
i will point this out... and i am guilty as well.... i am an observer... i love people watching..... one thing that i notice more and more of, is the amount of people wallking through the truck stops, low lights, and at night, and they are texting.... now i know sometimes when im texting i get really into my text, maybe its my mom n dad saying hi, or maybe its my girl showing what im " missing " at home... but theires a time, and a place for all these things..... walking throught a dark lot with big trucks and driving down the road are no place to be doing either of these....
i recently got me a new jacket, similar to those of the fed-ex drivers, and the arms, and the back have refelectors on them for my night time walks through the truck stops. shipper and recievers...
everyone needs to take their own actions out here.... always be aware of everything thats going on around them.... i was always taught that the bigger the machine, the louder the machine, that machine has the right of way..... its easer to hear that loud engine, then it is to hear you yell...

bulldozerbert, brsims and PurpleKW Thank this.

Do you recall when this was? I passed that Pilot two nights ago and I don't remember seeing anything out of the ordinary.

Always been my belief. When it comes to right of way in parking lots...SIZE MATTERS! Way easier for me to stop on foot, and get out of the way of the driver heading out to work, than for that big rig to stop or swerve after I just stepped out from behind a blind corner. Either way, it's a ###### shame this happened...Drivers, pay attention when you're around ANY type of vehicle or mobile equipment! We know how easy it is to get distracted in one direction, and completely miss something, or someone, in another! React accordingly, and stay out of the way. Be safe out there...

not to get off topic here, but i was at the pilot in maryland, x 5 off 81, i cant remember the area to save my life.... anyway.... i was sitting there for the weekend one time, and i seen a local cop come in.... go to a truck that was parked, with the window curtians closed, he got of his knocked, knocked again and again.... got back in his car, and about 10 mins later a highway patrol call pulled in, followed by peramedics, and the fire department, and shortly their after they had both doors open, and made the adjacent trucks get up and move to different spots... the driver was dead, his family tried calling him for 2 days according to the police officer who had parked in front of my truck.
    sad for sure
one time while i was at a loves, someplace just west of the mississippi river, i was standing inside, and as i was waiting to pay for my coffee, the maint. man came inside, and i over heard him tell his manager
" i knocked on the guys door a few times, no answer, so i stuck a note on his driver side window tellin him to call his wife, that she called here looking for you "
the manager told the maint man " well, we did what we could " as i was paying for my coffee, i was about to walk out of the store and be on way with my life, but i couldnt leave the store, i just couldnt walk out.... the images of the cop, paramedic fire fighter and the corner in MD kept hitting me.... i turned around, and asked for the manager, and when he came out i told him that i couldnt help but over hear his conversation with his maint man about him knocking and knocking and the driver not answering his door, and that he left a note.... i proceeded to tell him about how i witnessed them carry a dead man out of his truck, and i told him that if his wife went through the truoble to find out the phone # of the t;s this driver was parked at, that clearly something was wrong.... and asked how he would feel if his wife/child/brother-sister were the ones who may need help...and i told him if he does not call 911 and report this that i was going to and then i was going to make sure the family of this driver knows that u shrugged it off and went on to talk about football, as he did.... he told me to hold on, called 911 and reported the matter.... i hung around and waited... the police showed up, a fire truck showed up and the paramedics, found out the fire depart broke the window on the passanger side and got the door unlocked, and found the guy looking like death from the flue and he couldnt pull himself to get out of bed to plug his phone in to charge to call his wife.... they took him to the hospital, where i found out where he was, and called there 2 times to make sure he was going to be ok.... they said he would, but hes lucky someone decided to check on his well-being, he had a 104 temp. and didnt eat in 2 days.. with all the other drivers standing in line with me... i was the only one who said anything... but i had to.... i just couldnt leave that store and be on with my life knowing that something could have been wrong......

again, sorry to go off topic.

I don't think that was the issue.

The most dangerous maneuver is racing around a trailer corner without looking, and the inbound swing of the trailer could catch someone walking.

Usually it's only a hood or rear quarter that gets whacked.

I've seen too many close calls with that maneuver alone, driver is moving forward, but not paying attention to the mirrors - seems like that is what happened.
