So if you make the max $3.50 per mile, what are your expenses down to the dime including health insurance?
Just curious - what are you actually making after taxes for a calender year after taxes and expenses??
I have to hear this since you are indeed a beast... -
yeah I wanna know 2

The catch is im driving a Repo Wrecker, they are all short hauls, every once in a while get one that is running 150-200 miles, but not all that often.
Still in a good month I can make over 16 grand. But there is a lot of overhead with that, 3 employees, and a building/impound lot. Still that isnt bad for 1 truck. -
I will add to say when I was on the road I averaged around 1.40 - 2.00 a mile to the truck depending on what I was hauling, there were times I was able to get upwards of 3.50 a mile to the truck, but that was not an every day thing, that was often where id find 2 loads that were light enough and small enough to fit on my trailer.
yungtrucker86 Thanks this. -
I don't really know if the OP is accurate in his figures but I know when I reached my final goal I was making good money with the overtime and it did exceed alot of the college grads that were working for the oil company. The big difference between them and what I did was if I worked 20 years at the company I would make x amount of dollars. If they worked 20 years they would have better chances to move up in position and make alot more than I.
I do know one incident where a broker was cheating a O/O. When I was active duty I had to ship a bulldozer from MD to UT. It was an old TD-25, heavy but the blade was removed so he was not wide. The contract the Navy paid was a little over $50,000 and I knew that because I had the contract in hand. An O/O showed up to load the dozer and I was there to make sure he knew how to operate the dozer plus tell him of the extra safety concerns because the dozer had street tracks. I was checking out his truck and talking to him and he had a real nice ride. I made the comment that he'll make alot of cash from this load and he said sure a fair amount. I kinda made the comment that it was expensive and in my mind a complete rip-off. Come to find out his figure for the contract was no where near the real price. He flipped out when I told him how much and then requested a copy of the contract. There was no way I could do that and I told him so. Come to find out I must of lost it close to his truck. Maybe the wind blew it into the cab?? I don't know what happened after that except I went over the road with other equipment saving thousands. It's not the military that's ripping off the people for $500 hammers it's the contractors that sell to the government. -
#### i would been super pissed and ready to fight -
And without them, the driver has no loads. There is a disconnect nowadays, everyone thinks they deserve that super-high pay. Most of the CEO's that make million dollar bonuses work for Fortune 500 companies, of which, most trucking companies are NOT. The rest never see that kind of bonus. Most make well under 250k/year, working for small companies.
If I go to college for 4 years and work on a Bachelor's Degree, then I expect compensation for my time and investment into my education. If I go on to Graduate School for a Master's, then I will expect more.
Everyone wants Doctors' pay, without the Doctors' expense. You cannot expect to make as much as the guy at the top, because the guy at the top did one of two things... If not both! They went to school, or busted their backsides working the company up from nothing, which requires they do the work themselves until they grow big enough to hire others to do it for them. This is the "American Dream" on steroids, and one that more Americans should strive for to be honest.
Rather than aiming for a cute little house, with a picket fence, and 2.5 kids... They went for a Skyscraper, with a security team, and 2.5million employees. Chances are, their family life isn't as happy as the average "dreamer."
You want to be that guy? Good! Find a way to do what they did, otherwise stop whining and be glad that you have a job in a horrible economy.
I have to agree, even though I do not have one of "those" jobs yet. I can say from personal experience, that after 3.5 years straight at Schneider, with no accidents, and only one non-moving violation, I get responses pretty much the same day I turn an application into a company. I shop around constantly... Looking for one of "those" jobs, because I know that they won't come to me.
I agree with everything you said... Except the first part.
Yes, people can change jobs, but it's not as easy as it sounds. If things are going bad, then you have so many variables to consider (which most people don't) it becomes extremely hard to justify the move unless it's REALLY bad where you're at.
You have to locate a decent looking job, qualify for it, give notice, adjust the budget, sacrifice vacation seniority, sacrifice benefits for at least 30 days (usually 60+) possibly compensate for new commute times/expenses, and make sure that you will actually do better there.
If the job requires a move, then you have to determine the cost of living in the new location, upset the wife and kids, reset all your services (Cable may be more expensive there, as well as basic utilities) and a multitude of social sacrifices that have to be made... Friends, Family, etc...
A good learning experience, he will either never deal with that broker again, or he will make sure he gets a fair share. Brokers are no different than us, they want to make as much money as they can, so if he can convince a driver to haul a $50,000 load for $2,500... More power to the broker. I know a LOT of people are going to hate what I just said, but that's capitalism. Negotiate, or deal with what you find.
Your choice. -
Oh Mr. Beast that's cheating.
If I wanted to post an insane dollar/mile rate I'd go with a NYC Taxi!
I think it's 50 cents a block.
