I do allot of 2 lane truck'in because I haul allot of furniture and allot of these small mom and pop places are way out in the middle of no where.

I do take short cuts off the Big Road sometimes but only if its signifgantly shorter. Like From.......Binghamton, NY up to Canandaigua, NY instead of takeing 17-86-390-20. On the way up there while MT I'll go 17-86-371-21-20. It shaves off about 45 minutes of driveing, BUT I'll only go that way MT because its allot of STEEP up and down and sharp turns and small towns. So MT I can fly up and down the hills no problem and slow down for the curves easily.

BUT on the way down I have to go the long way, because we load Wine up there im usually at 78,000-79,000lbs when I leave and theres no way to make that same route as effeicant while that heavy. I have done it once and it took just as long as takeing the long way on the Big road but with allot more work and fuel and break used.

I still don't understand Kentucky's aversion to using a number system lke the other 49 states.

Martha Collins, Louis B Nunn, William Nacher,,,

When I ran to Pheonix from Indy and back I would end up taking I-17 south to Pheonix. I got talking to a local down there and he mentioned taking a state road 87, to SR 260, to SR 377. He told me that it would save 2 hours going up the interstate. I thought that he was full of it. Turns out that some of the speed limits on those two lanes were just as fast as the interstate. He was right, it did save me a little over two hours going that route. When it is in the state of Indiana it is no problem for me to hit the back road as I have been on most of them.

Yeah and Texas secondaries are pretty much highways once you leave a town's city limits.

Texas has always had great secondary roads...They also have a great system of "Farm Roads" that'll get you just about anywhere you need to go as well.

I like running back roads when possible. Only downside for me is school buses. I'm always mindful of what time of day it is when going around blind curves and over hills.

Depends on what you are trying to get done! I used to run produce out of florida>indianapolis. Sometimes the load payed by wieght or box count. Fill me up!!! Seems i know every back road from Homestead to Indy. Sometimes, during springbreak or whatever, you where better off avoiding I-75 anyway.
