Does anyone out here have a non-48 state cab card?
If so,
I am wondering the following:
Let's say I only have 5 states (mainly mid-west) on my cab card.
Now, can I run into/through non-listed states as long as I am NOT under dispatch and empty?
Is this still legal or ?
..I am looking at taking the rig for work (interior sleeper and stuff) and wondering about IRP in this case
especially since I likely will only be bob-tailing...Everyone I know has 48 states on their cab card...so that isn't much help-

Perhaps, the out-of-state repair facility can answer your question if their other customers obtained a temporary permit.
I was a road driver for a Michigan beer distributor. They sent their local delivery trailers across Indiana into Illinois for reconditioning of the roll doors, etc. I was not involved in it, but heard that they were stopped at a scale for lack of proper licensing or permits.Hanadarko Thanks this. -
See? That's the sort of stuff that concerns me. I might do this more than one time and to get trip permits for each state I pass is not only a pain but get's spendy. I am thinking of just ramping up my IRP anyway but curious in the meantime...

I've only got about 6 states on mine, but I don't know the answer to your question. Try asking dieselbear in the truck regs section.

No you can not, you will need to get a trip permit or add the states to your irp account, dont get caught its like running unregistered and they will shut you down, plus fine you. The trip permits will cost less than a fine. I got caught in Va a few years back, they gave me a fine and made me order trip permits, some states are stricter than otheres but i would not chance it.

It's amazing...I don't need to use the log book when I am running the rig w/o being under dispatch - but need to have IRP...

A few weeks ago I spend $85 for a one-week Idaho trip permit, and then we weren't even able to get the load because of weather. If we end up having to go to that shipper again I'm not even going to bother with the permit, because their facility is between the state line and the POE.

If it is an adjoining state and you plan to visit a few times in a year, it is easier to add it to your existing IRP as all you will pay is the state minimum charge which should be cheaper than one trip permit and definitely cheaper than several trip permits +/or one fine...
When NJ joined the IRP [we and VT were the last two!] the seminar DMV gave at Motor Truck described the use of fleets. At the time I had a few daycabs that stayed in a 4 state radius VRS our sleepers running about 21 states. I made them into two fleets. As long as one truck in the fleet reached each state on the IRP, all the trucks in that fleet kept all of them, other wise you loose the states you don't go to and at renewal they figure your apportion at 100% of the places you went. If you want to add any state you didn't visit to keep it -or- as a new state they charged the state minimum price on top...they get you coming or going!
If you don't go to a state, you loose it next year then you get a trip permit and report those miles and they will add it the next year...that's one reason why guys just pay the price for all 48, peace of mind that one won't fall off and not be noticed until they are handing you a ticket...
