Why is it that the DOT / FMCSA has the age set at 21 for Interstate drivers? I've had my CDL since I was 18, (A few months shy of 20 now) and drive mostly dump truck and have a tag trailer for moving equipment. I've lost out on a lot of work not being able to cross from WY to ID, and during the winter months I'd like to be able to run the west coast while there is nobody digging. I know there are you that say I may not be experienced enough, But I've been riding in a truck since I was born, and can hold my own, I can pass a drug test. I'm guessing that insurance companies would make it near impossible even if the law were to be changed...

Also not trying to be ####y, but to you who say I do not have the experience and all, I'm pretty confident I can hang with the best of em... I do know what I'm doing runnin a rig.

I'm sure it's an insurance requirement, just like you have to be 25 to rent a car in most cases.
It's probably a common sense requirement, too - although you have some good experience behind you, I think the AVERAGE 18-20 year old wouldn't be able to hack it, much less stay alive - all that texting and driving, you know. There was no texting when I was 18, but I carried an M-16 and 240 rounds of ammo (USAF SP, went in a week out of high school), and it's downright scary to think about what I was doing versus what was on my mind. -
Hey 307 you have what a year left before 21? Patience my man...yes you have experience already which is great.....and yes it probably is an insurance company thing.
You'll get your shot driver. -
True, I know in one year I will never care about this law again. It's just a matter of lost work. I live on the WY ID border, and there was a lot of work I lost out on this summer just due to the fact I could not cross that state line. There's no port so I was tempted as hell to just run it, but figured if I did get picked up I would screw myself pretty good for the long run. I'm talking about 2-3 weeks of twiddling my thumbs instead of turning my wheels.

Bummer - nice area, used to live in Lander, WY after I retired from the Air Force - that whole border area is cool.
Can you relocate for part of the season, perhaps using an extended stay hotel in an area where work is popping for you, versus crossing state lines all the time? -
As far as relocating my plans are for next winter to build a tractor truck set up for end / belly / side dump and a lowboy, that way in the winter i would be able to hook on to a flatbed or van / reefer and go. When construction is really popping though it's such a day to day thing. What years were you in the AF? My Dad was in 68-70.

Before you know it you'll be wishing you were 20 again. Not to say you aren't, but alot of it has to do with maturity level and the gov't sets a standard. It's one of them things you have to wait until you get older to understand. A person's thought process changes with life experience's and age.

one of my friends was caught driving underage, his dad owned the company, & he was arrested, & fined heavy, as well as his dad had to send someone to get the load, plus get him out of jail & home. he was 17 years old, & that was before you needed a CDL.
he was supposed to stay in state, but his dad needed a load delivered & sent him anyway,he lived in Virginia & was caught in Texas, he has never gotten over being arrested, he now only drives a pickup, & probably shouldnt drive, due to other health issues now.
he has not drove a big truck in over 25 years, he had a stroke in his early 20's & became disabled, he just turned 50 last month. so that incident happened around 33 years ago.
as already said, govt set standards of maturity levels, & feels 21, is best. & unfortunately I tend to agree, as I grew up when drinking was legal at 18, but stores wouldnt hassle you if you was underage. people could bring a beer to class in college, drinking was allowed at college, but as a rule, as people mature they become more aware of their surroundings, & life, & how what they do affects others, people become more resopnsible, so even though you may be more responsible than most, so many have caused problems that everyone pays for a past generations mistake.
I am a former street racer, I grew up when muscle cars were 15 to 20 years old & dirt cheap, & I street raced all the time for over 10 years, I myself wasnt responsible enough until I was in my early 30's I would have got myself killed or hurt someone else.
anyway, you have the rest of your life ahead of you, just enjoy the time you get, & the year will slip past you before you know it. just think in 20 more years, a year will seem to fly by, but when your young they seem to take forever.
Randyrocknroll nik Thanks this. -
Yea...but you are old enough to go off to war in Iraq! Efffed up!
Double standards. I think if you pass the required driving test, drug test, medical test you should qualify to drive where ever you want! More BS gooberment sheyat.
