How many times are yall gunna repeat yourselves about your opinions??
Is it necessary? No
Is it helpful? Depends on what you are trying to do. There are alot of cry babies out here, and those are the ones that are fun to mess with. Although I dont run mine too high, I like a radio to scream somtimes and listen to em whine. And yes, the ones with good external speakers can hear me fine, the rest of you's can kiss it.

I've had lots of users (including truckers) at my shop asking me to remove the added-on echo boards that they either had installed (elsewhere) in the past, or were in secondhand radios they'd bought.
When I'm not fixing commercial and CB radios for a living, I play music for fun & gas money. Reverb ("echo") only helps voices when they're having to blend with instruments, to help merge the timing in phrases -- it gives a little wiggle room. But between songs, when someone makes an announcement from the bandstand? They always turn off the reverb so they can be understood.
On CB, there's usually enough audio distraction going on in the cab between engine and road noise, maybe the be-bop radio, the GPS, and just the sheer amount of background noise on the CB from other stations. Anything that further distorts speech, however cool it may sound on your talkback, just makes it harder for the other guy to hear.
FWIW, I'm not a professional driver; I'm a licensed two-way tech. But I retired from 30 years of public safety, driving fire engines and, later, police cars. Diesel engines (sometimes), sirens, air brakes (sometimes), gunfire (sometimes); it's good to be understood on the radio.

I like the echo and reverb on my DX 99V. I don't have it turned way up to where I can not be understood. But I have it on and working. Why? Because it's fun and it makes me smile a bit. It is fun. Just like noise toys. Love those.

A driver with echo was lost and looking for directions.
He kept having to repeat himself.
I chimed in with, "Well maybe if you turned off that stupid (effin') echo people could understand you!"
By the time he did, he was out of range.
I finished the conversation with, "Maybe you should've spent your echo money on a better antenna, dummy!!"handlebar Thanks this. -
I use both echo and reverb at all times. However they are set to 9 & 10 o'colck respectively. It does not take much.
