On a weekly basis I get over 700 E-Mails. Do I remember everyone - no... so if I ask you to E-Mail me to go offline, Do I remember when I get an E-Mail from someone whom E-mail address I do not know and all I get is that I am having problems with my TND.

Or maybe the 20,000 plus in the last 15 months...

So a little memory jog of why you are E-Mailing me is not too much to ask for.

Yes, their are a lot of common issues out there and yes some issues have been resolved. When you post I have no idea what version of software you are on. Are you on 1472 or 1808? No idea. Issues in 1472 were fixed in 1573. So again, some info on your end goes a long way.

    main screen\preferences\device\about.

Yes their are some hardware issues that I know about and when I think it is a hardware issue I do work to get it resolved.

When their is a software issue that I know about in the current version then if it affects everyone, I post it here. Otherwise I test it on the Beta version to see if I can duplicate or if it has been fixed.

Yes, I give a lot of my time to this public forum. Do you donate your free time to helping other drivers and teaching the new drivers how to back up in the lots or you simply watch them and make comments on the CB on your 10 hour break?

Do I make everyone 100% happy - nope. But, I do try my best. That is all I can do.

Do I make policy at RM - Nope, my job is to oversee the Beta testers. Do you have 80+ people to be accountable for?

The Beta testers do not get brand new TND's to test. I take returned TND's, refurbish them and then test them. This takes time.

I am only one person here. I had more vacation time and free time when I was OTR, but this is what I chose to do now.

I feel strongly that you the driver needs support 24/7/365. Many a night I have been up at 3am or driven 100 miles one way to support a driver on the road.

Map issues are and will be a constant source of updates. This goes for any Navigation device. Maps will never be 100% correct. It on the average takes a year for anytype of road change to make it's way into the mapping databases. Rand or any other navigation device have no say so over that process.

In the release notes on every TND Dock is what has been resolved or added. If you have an TND, then you have the TND Dock. Start it up and read the release notes.

The Beta testers are out 24/7/365. All 49, plus Canada. Can they see or spot every trouble? - nope. Remember they are Beta Testers. They are not paid, but give their free time for this. Do I expect them to make this a priority in their lifes - nope. Their driving job is a priority. If the weather is bad, then I expect them to drive safely and pay attention to their driving. When they send in info I am grateful. Do I wish I got more info - of course, but again, they are volunteering their time.

So ease off. Anytime you wish to pop into my shoes for two weeks, you can. My wife and I will take a cruise and let my mind rest.

If you have a TND and have issues then by all means post here. But, ease off the comments that reflect just your opinion. Their is another thread for that.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Ok, so I'm going to break my rule of not being compelled into political / religious / baited / or emotional-argumentative posts this one time. Typically, arguing on a public forum is like pissing into the wind - all you get is wet and yellow in the end, and everyone thinks you smell funny.

    1. Actual raw "map data" is PURCHASED by the GPS, auto, and Internet mapping site makers from one of a handful of companies. NavTeq is the biggest and TeleAtlas is a major player as well. There are a few others, but these are the two names that provide the raw data to the VAST majority of location-based devices and programs. (To name just a few that are current or past customers of that data: Microsoft, Google, Rand McNally, AOL/Mapquest, Garmin, TomTom, ALK Technologies/PC Miler, Telogis, Motorola, Navigon, Delorme, LG, Nokia, Sony, Yahoo Maps, HP, AT&T, UPS, FedEx, and QualComm, the Army, Verizon, and literally thousands more.) So when you are using a map product by one of those, you are using the maps and addresses provided (in part or in whole) by NavTeq or TeleAtlas.
Why is this? Because the sheer enormity creating GPS coordinate-based, nationwide, and worldwide databases requires a full-time company all its own, and it does not make fiscal sense for a GPS company, or cell-phone provider, or web site to "reinvent the wheel." NavTeq ALONE has more than 5000 employees worldwide. This is more than Rand McNally, Cobra, and PC Miler - COMBINED. And all they do is gathering GPS, address, attribute, and POI data, constantly. Then they sell this data to the GPS makers. What makes companies like Cobra, Rand, PC Miler, and Garmin a "trucking GPS" is that those companies then overlay their proprietary truck-related "attributes" to those base maps. And in that regard their can be BIG differences.
EVERY GPS BRAND has built-in the cost of the maps into either the initial price of the unit, or into periodic map updates that you can buy down the road. For instance, Garmin offers "lifetime maps" either built into the purchase price OR down the road as a one-time fee or a lesser periodic charge if you don't want to pay for the lifetime option. (And those "lifetime" maps expire at Garmin's discretion when they deem the "life of the product model has ended.") PC Miler charged $49.95 to get new maps for all x40 models in August and has been free (so far) on all x50 models. Cobra offers the ability to upgrade any 7700 Pro GPS to the 7750 model for a fee, which will include their latest software. They, so far, have offered free software updates for existing products, but surely will soon have to declare what 2011 maps will cost, as will Rand. The bottom line is that there is NO SUCH thing as free and regular map updates "indefinitely." They have to buy them - so eventually they have to recover that cost through various sales techniques, or go out of business. Simple economics.

    2. The Rand TND series has essentially 4 failure modes that are a recurring theme throughout this thread - the usb power socket and/or plug, the power button, software corruption, and non-connectivity to some newer laptops. All of these are identified and have the highest priorities at Rand. The software corruption has reduced dramatically via changes in the code and the TND dock application, the power buttons have been made stronger, the power sockets are being made stronger, and the voltage issue within the USB sockets of newer laptops as related to the USB power requirements of the TND is understood, has a work-around, and I suspect is solved in some hardware manner for the future. The power button and socket aren't even an actual defect - they just aren't "trucker-proof" in terms of their durability under stress and since the intended customer IS in a rugged environment and is often a "rugged" individual, then they need to spec their hardware to endure worst case scenarios. IN ANY of these cases, they cover all of this under warranty (with the most painful aspect being the inconvenience and time involved with returning and receiving replacement.)

    3. Mark is not a design engineer, nor does he have any power to add an address, exit, road, etc. into the current map database. All he can do for maps is turn in discrepancies which then go onto NavTeq. Those are rolled into thousands more just like them which are turned in by users of Microsoft Streets, Mapquest, Garmin, and thousands of other sources. In fact, ALL of us have the ability to do the same thing direct to NavTeq and TeleAtlas ourselves (for instance, NavTeq is here: http://mapreporter.navteq.com/)

    4. Mark (and Rand McNally) DO HAVE the ability to listen, test, and implement "attribute" and routing changes into the existing mapset, and to add or fix the program features. And I have personally (along with many of you) witnessed them do this innumerable times over the last 14 months.

    5. Mark identified himself as the lead beta test manager here a year ago (after having been a member of the forum previously) and a driver. I warned him back then that he was throwing himself out there for criticism of the product as a whole and NOT just for him as a person - that there would be considerable ball-breaking that he would have to endure for many things out of his control and he accepts that. He deliberately started this support thread to open that pipeline between you and the factory. There are a few others that work directly for providers of products and services that you have who have also done this here and my hat is off to them as well. But I would venture to say there MANY, MANY more read the feedback about their products here, but do not open their yaps for the retribution. He is a VERY regular visitor to this forum. I've seen him drive 100 miles to meet a driver at a truck stop to help with his GPS. I've been on the phone with him at midnight on a Friday night as he forged through a problem that popped up for a driver who was in desperation.

    6. Finally, to troll a support thread for chances to offer non-constructive attacks on the product or the person attempting to do everything within his power to make the driver more satisfied with that product is, in my humble opinion, a travesty at worst, and a miss-use of this fine forum at best. There are plenty of "opinion" locations here for that - as long as we all remain inside of the rules and guidelines that we agreed to when we joined. This thread isn't one of them. And to even remotely insinuate that this particular individual (Mark) does not go ridiculously ABOVE AND BEYOND for not only the drivers who use this forum, but for customers of mine, of the truck stops, even to help with products that he knows something about without having ANY further vested personal or financial interest in - is obscenely ludicrous.

I have relationships (some good and some not-so-good) with dozens of companies that make products used by truck drivers. I test them, I break them, I publish opinions on them, and some of them make it into my warehouse. Most don't. What I DON'T DO is publish public opinions about any of those companies as an "entity" or their "individual" personnel - with the single exception of this post. I feel THAT strongly about it this one time. Sorry it was so long.

    Respectfully.
    - Don

    Mark,

    On the TND700,

The screen that reads the truck's current postion-current location, nearest cross street, lat/long-is blank except for the lat/long when the unit isn't moving. Also, might be a helpfull feature to include the nearest mile-marker.

Am sitting on the side of I40 as I post this and realised all this as it would be really helpfull at the moment.

    The unit is a T7E 992408

    Thanks,
    Mark-kd7lqw

Looks like this thread is getting back on the right track again. I have a question about the 500; specifically how it routes the unit around low bridge/overpasses. Is the re a way for me to see what the reason for the specific route issued? There is an overpass in Chapel Hill,NC that I am routed around: it actually is truck accessible. It would be good to be able to see why the route was chosen and then be able to override the unit or follow the designated route. Thank you to everyone who offers positive feedback and helpful suggestions. Its a tough job and everyone and everything that can make it a bit easier is appreciated.

I had some lenghty discussions yesterday with the developer's whom write this code. Currently if a restriction is ahead of you it will simply route you around it without your knowing what is ahead. I feel that a driver even though being routed around it should know the restriction ahead. Now, comes the issue. Now the code has to think about the restriction and thus place a warning to you on the screen. I think it is doable, but the feature needs to be thought out. I requested that we add this to the feature list. So, maybe in the near future I will be seeing it in a Beta Version. But, for now, since the developer is heavy in code for an upcoming future project for Rand, we will put this on the top of the list for features....

And yes, in case some of you are wondering, I do have direct access to the person and his team whom write the code for the TND. We resolve a lot of issues this way. I am in NC, Rand is in IL, and the developers are in CA. So, a lot of daily E-Mails and phone calls.

You really have no Idea of what a Beta Tester is. And by your comments about a free truck you are not a truck driver either.

A Beta tester gives up their free time to test a product in return they get to keep the product they test. This is in every industry. FREE TIME. they are not bound nor required to send in daily reports, weekly reports, etc etc.. They offer their free time to make a product better. I have had many a testers, and I can tell you that they do a DARN excellent job. I Beta Tested on the road also and to do their job and to keep track of things they find and to take their free time to sit down and report back is beyond what is asked. Some testers find they do not have the time available and I simply run them inactive.

They are not paid in any way, shape, or form. They even offer their time at the truck shows. They stand there 3 days for over 12 hours each day talking to fellow truck drivers. They are not paid for those 3 days. 3 days out of their pockets.

So ease off on the Beta Testers. They do this because they care about their fellow truck drivers as I do.

Hard earned money. - Sure you earn a living like everyone else. Everyone works to make a salary. If you are a driver SINGLETRUCKER, you chose the industry, they did not come knocking on your doorstep. You can always bow out and join the 8-5 group. But, do you go complaining to where you got your car unit and tell them about your hard earned money. I look for bargains like everyone else. I live on a budget like everyone else. Are my hard earned dollars any different than yours? nope... If you bought a TND you had 30 days to make a choice. 30 days. With a driver putting in about 8000-12,000 miles in 30 days, you would have had time to see if you liked it or not. But, I notice that you do not post about issues with the TND, you personally have taken the attack with me and Rand. You want the best of something you do not own. You have attacked this thread for over a week now and yet you offer no concrete advice on how you think a feature or the TND might be improved. Rand is working hard on internal routing, features, and future items for the TND. Voices were asked for, as well as French and Spanish. You think that this was pulled out of a hat and just tossed into the TND?

Let me see,,, I have the driver on the phone as I am driving... hard to forget whom I am talking too... if you are a driver have you gone out of your way for your company without pay to deliver or pick up a load for them? nope - you want paid.

Lay off the comments. You are a person that I can see that likes to stir up the pot to see what happens without providing any positive comments.

Again, this is a support thread. Your opinions should be in another thread and I have posted that link before...

I am not responding anymore to your comments.

    Enough is enough....

    Thanks,
    Mark
