Concerning the OP ...
Don't forget about the thousands of drivers who walked away from the industry, but still carry CDL's.
If the pay came up enough, I bet many of those would consider coming back.
We also may see a major relaxing of the 6 months in the last year requirement, since a lot of companies will be looking for drivers with recently cleared (or almost clear) records (3 years).
Why a strike? The CSA 2010 will cripple trucking.

I am not sure why anyone would report a fsc differently than they would the standard rate. Both are an expense item and part of the shipping charges. All the fsc really does is make the shipper think that he isn't paying as much to ship his product and the owner operator or carrier think that they are making more money, even if the rate is the same. For instance, there is no difference in the money if the rate is $2.25 without a fsc than a $2/mile + $0.25/mile fsc. The money is the same. All I am saying is that my rate will reflect my cost of doing a load plus a fair markup. It doesn't make any difference whether the fsc is broken out of the rate or not. If you aren't making enough with your current rate then it is time to raise the entire rate for which you haul. Allowing for a fsc when you have a fixed rate in a contract could help offset some of the added costs of unexpected spikes in fuel costs. That is the main reason for the fsc in the first place. My point is that if I need $2/mile of $3/mile to haul a load then it doesn't make any difference to me how it is broken down. -
CAT700 looks like someone was in the same frame of mind as you and will now serve life or death by thinking shooting a politician would make a difference. Thanks to this mental person and others like him politicians are looking at gun laws to restricting the mentally stable to give up their guns. Thanks a lot.

Data Man:
Nice try , I fail to see how what I said compares to what a criminal did.
Nothing I said had anything to do with shooting any one .
Just why some seem to jump to self imagined conclusions on what others say is beyond me..
If there is any dangerous thinking here it is on your end , not mine.
I am 100% NRA a "Patron" member and have been for many years . I have supported responsible gun ownership and the 2 A with more than just words.
My statements had nothing to do with Murder. Yours assumes I did. You are the one with the wrong thinking and a lesser understanding of what was said.
It may serve you well to go back and see what I said and why I said it.
It had more to do with defending the honest people in this country than what you have now implied.
Twisting words is so easy for some people. Every thing I said had every thing to do with true patriotism and honor. Not murder, like what happened by certain factions of our government in Waco TX, Ruby ridge, and or a criminal with a history of mental problems that shot someone in Arizona.
Yes, I am saying these were wrong acts. Totally unjustifiable killings by some of our nations police force. Those who should have been met with a force that should have said enough is enough. Murder ??
The man that opened fire in a crowd and killed innocent people in Arizona could have and should have been stopped by any number of armed citizens that were in that crowd in that place and on that day.
Why then did 9 or so people have to get shot before anyone acted???
I have nothing in common with the man that killed others in a fit of rage.
By you assuming this is or was my line of thinking makes you a very dangerous person.
By setting up more gun laws taking away and limiting the right to carry in certain places creates targets of opportunity and this is what he was counting on. No different than the school shootings etc.
Any honest citizen could have stopped him in his tracks before he killed and or wounded so many.
If you consider that wrong thinking, I can not help you understand.
Go back and re-read what you wrongfully accused me of..
They have been attacking our gun rights for many years now. I hope you have not just noticed that.
I have had a CCW for over 15 years now and if you have any idea of what is involved you would also know that a persons record must be extremely clean to get one and keep it.
For now I will allow the idea that you just had nothing better to do and let your fingers do the thinking when you submitted your off key comment AIMED me.
And now Back to the subject on trucking and our rights and so on. -

Lack of training sir....... carrying a handgun ( legally ) does not necessarily mean you will use it in a given situation. The handgun is for your defense, not offensive moves. You are not Mr. LEO and you do not enjoy his training or protection.
Too many things can go wrong in this particular situation. What if you fired and hit the congresswoman ? The little girl ? Despite your good intentions....you could go down for murder. This thought must enter your mind before you pull the weapon for training says if I pull it I intend to use it.
Sad but true, JMO -
As far as a strike goes, sure I am all for it,but,REALLY,will one happen to make a difference???? NOPE....If sounding off makes you feel better,by all means keep on keepin on,but certainly, you must know a meaningful strike will NEVER happen.
-
Actually, a meaningful strike has no choice BUT to happen. Allow me to explain before you jump all over me. When a driver hauls a load, he or she does it for compensation. That form of compensation currently is the U.S. Dollar. On the current world stage our U.S. Dollar is losing steam quicker then the falcons in a playoff game. Once the dollar collapses, and it will collapse, what will the driver then be working for? What will he pay for fuel with? Ladies and Gents, I suggest you do your homework. A strike is coming, however, it's not the kind of strike we need...

Remember, business is business.
People barely paying the bills will bow down and serve their master as always, and that master is the few pennies you earn in this business.
The few devoted potentially heaving bricks off an overpass, would do nothing but further taint the public's view of the transportation industry, especially if one of those incidents provoke a wreck that costs innocent lives.
And I also agree that in the heat of the moment, a well intending armed citizen could have stopped him, or hurt someone else, because he/she wasn't trained in those scenarios. -
a strike is coming. When the dollar implodes, and it will, what will drivers work for? If you think the notion of a devalued dollar is unreasonable, look around. Remember when oil was a hundred dollars a barrel and diesel was only 2.25? Well, you better start to pay attention.
-
You organize a strike,I will come, but how many others will??
