Thanks for the compliment...your right that is still decent money, I guess I just got spoiled a little bit. I agree about e logs being the future, like I have stated before I hate change, and just need to get used to the new system.
The wife is getting ready to take me to the truck so I can hit the road and get in front of this storm that is headed this way. I hate driving after being up all day, but if I can get 300 miles under my belt tonight I shouldn't have any problem making my delivery Tuesday morning.

Been offered a job with Cheesman. I was excited til I read the elog thing. What a fly in the ointment. I used to haul ltl for Jevic til they folded. I love LTL. Makes more to the job then just a straight load. It's addictive.lol Might go with Deboer or Glenmoore know.

hey runningman, small world, I swapped loads with you a few weeks ago in western PA. Cheeseman is indeed a great company, I've worked there for 8 months and came from a similar large flatbed carrier. the smaller company atmosphere is a big change. elogs have taken some getting used to but they're not a dealbreaker. currently waiting for a load out of Laredo, 3000 miles last week and 2200 already this week, got a nice LTL load out of Duncan that delivered all over TX.

Glad you found me on here. Feel free to contribute to this thread whenever you fell like it. I had a good week mileage wise....getting ready to watch some play-off football and enjoy some adult beverages. I will post an update later tonight or tomorrow.

Chesseman isn't a bad option ..... I ran 3867 paid miles on e logs this week, but it was of course all truck load this week. Keep your options open.

Well I had a very productive week , I left out Sunday night about 2100 so I could get out in front of this storm that was nailing the South East. I'm glad I did, because the wife said it started snowing about midnight. I made it up to Mount Jackson, Va. and shut down for the night. Once my ten hour break was over I headed on up to Andover Mass.. If I didn't run into any unforeseen issues I should be able to make it to the consignee. I pulled into there parking lot about 2330, with 45 minutes left on my driving time.

I took my break and checked in after my break was up. This is supposed to be a drop and hook, but when we first got this account there never seemed to be any empties available, so I had my fingers crossed. There wasn't an empty available, but the guy in the receiving dept. said he would unload one of the trailers in the door if I didn't mind waiting a few minutes. As I was waiting for the trailer to get empty, dispatch sent me a message that they had a preloaded trailer at this same customer going back down to to Spartanburg, S.C.. Even better...so I went around to shipping got my paperwork and was headed South.

All week I was dodging major snow storms, the storm that had nailed the South had merged with a storm from the mid-west and Boston was the bulls eye so I wanted to beat feet and get back down South ASAP. I made it my goal to make it down to the Lee-Hi truck stop on I81 in Va.. this is one of my favorite stops because there food is awesome. I made it to Harrisburg, Pa. before I hit the snow, I ran in pretty heavy snow until I hit the Va. line, and then the roads were just wet on down to Lee Hi. I pulled in, and went in to the restaurant to get my usual. Every time I go in there I always tell myself im going to try something different, but I always in end up getting there pot roast. Just like my mom used to make.

After my break was over I eased on down to Spartanburg. I got to the customer, and found only a skeleton crew working. This area was still crippled, because of the above mentioned storm. I found someone to sign my bills, and dropped the trailer. About the time I finished dropping my trailer dispatch called and asked if I was interested in picking up at this same customer, going back up to Andover, Mass.. At first I hesitated, because I knew Boston was going to be getting hammered later in the day, but after thinking of the miles I agreed. I grabbed the loaded trailer headed North once again. I spent the night again at Lee Hi, and breaking news....... I actually tried something different on the menu. I gambled on the Salmon, and it ended up being a great choice. I'm always hesitant to order fish at a truck stop, but I have stopped there on a Friday night before (they have a seafood buffet with crab legs) and it has never disappointed.

I made it back up to Andover with no major issues, and had a preassigned load picking up about 42 miles away for Friday morning, headed down to Statesville, N.C. for a Monday morning delivery. I made it home Saturday around 1300 and I have a 1000 appt. for Monday in Statesville. I know have whined alot lately about going to e logs, but I had a great week mileage wise this week, and finished the week with 3816 miles. Now granted it was all truckload freight, with pretty much no waiting to get loaded and unloaded, but I will take those miles anytime.

I hope everyone has a safe and productive week.

Welcome aboard! Did you get a Mack or a Prostar? I have a Mack and I had a few issues with the truck in the beginning, but they have always fixed all the issues I have brought to there attention, and they have even found things that I didn't write up. They have a pretty thorough maintenance program. Keep us updated on your progress and feel free to use this thread to share your experience.

I'm going to request to work out of Duncan more often then, I don't seem to get those miles running out of Fort Recovery. usually 2500 a week, 3000 if I'm lucky. had a good 2 weeks staying out last weekend though, 3600 miles last week, after I got my LTL stops off in TX, everything was drop and hook from then on out.

    Cheeseman pros:

well managed and profitable company: company has been in business a while, survived recessions, and things are looking up in 2011

newer, very well maintained equipment: International 9200s, Mack Visions, and International Prostars. the Macks are nice to drive but have a smaller sleeper, 9200s I could take or leave, the Prostars are real nice to drive and have a massive sleeper. the shop is top notch and has fixed everything I ever needed fixed. they even put a brand new seat in my Mack when I complained that the lumbar support didn't work. they are also taking delivery of new Stoughton vans that are very nice to pull.

hometime: my first full week on the job I was home 5 nights and spent 2 in the truck. this is rare but it happens from time to time if I'm heading back and forth from OH to New England. I live 285 miles from Fort Recovery right on I80, one of our major lanes. sometimes I have a full day off during the week, occasionally a 3 or 4 day weekend, usually around a holiday, nights at home during the week. they have gotten me home every time I requested time off and genuinely try to get their drivers home. I get 48+ hours at home every weekend, and have only been stuck out once, but I don't mind being stuck out if I didn't have plans and they give me a long load.

good, usually consistent pay: I bring home $600 on a slow week, $700-$800 on an average week, and $1000+ when I stay out. I've had a few slow weeks, but this usually meant I was home more than average. it's nice to be able to afford to take a day off here and there.

practical miles: I get paid for every mile I am dispatched on and actually drive, and have never once been bothered about out of route.

they treat me well: everyone I have come in contact with at the company has been real decent, it might take some time after you get hired before they start to recognize you, but they don't treat you like a number.

    Cheeseman cons:

dispatch doesn't have great communication: it seems if you send a message to dispatch, it goes into a queue, usually I think they read it, but don't always respond. I send business related messages, like hey, I'm going to be late, or hey, I'd like to run this weekend, and never get a response. it's not like I'm telling dispatch their horoscopes or asking what they did last weekend. usually they just keep sending me loads, but I rarely get a preplan unless I ask for it. keep in mind this applies to Fort Recovery dispatch, when I'm near Duncan, SC, they tend to communicate better and be a little friendlier. I'm not saying the folks in Fort Recovery aren't friendly, I just rarely hear anything from them.

International Prostars: if you are issued one, it WILL break down, repeatedly, usually on a Friday when you are trying to get home. they have issues with their automatic transmissions and DPF (exhaust emissions) filters, mine has broken down a total of 4 times since I got it in August. dispatch and the shop will work hard to get you in a rental and get you home, but still, it's frustrating.

electronic logs: I feel they have hurt my productivity slightly, and when you've driven all day, or all week, or 14 days straight, that clock constantly ticking down can be psychological hell. the Peoplenet system is somewhat difficult to learn to use and needs a lot of fine tuning. one plus is that dispatch doesn't ask how many hours I have left to drive today, they can see it on their end.

expensive, not that great health insurance: I choose to waive health insurance and they pay me $100 a month to do it. they offer a few plans, seemed their traditional buy-up plan had extremely high deductibles.

on the whole, they are better than I expect to find anywhere else as far as getting the right mix of hometime and pay and I'd like to continue to work here for a while.
