I am looking for the top 2 trucking companies a veteran driver would recommend to a new driver for that first job. Surely for many truckers out there, in all the years of chatting with other professionals, there must be some companies that would be a little better than the rest for new drivers.
I have looked through many threads and websites, but so far, all have strayed from the original request of information to be of much use. Like the top 100 best and worst songs of all time, some make both lists. Like grandpa the trucker, giving advice to his grandson. He has got to summon up all his seasoned wisdom, and make the best choice for his kin. "Johnny Jr, you need to apply at this company".
FYI I'm late 40s, live in metro Denver.

Two GOOD ones in that area would be Watkins Shepard and May Trucking.
American TruckerJarhed1964 Thanks this. -
Oh wow. I know central refrigerated has a yard in Henderson.. you'd have to go to school in slc. But you could get on the dedicated alcohol runs outta golden after 3 months. Central does good training and everyone's very understanding and Co operative when there's a problem.. just stay away from leasing a truck and you should be okay. Good luck.

I think crete would be best, better pay, better bennies

W/S, Crete/Schaeffer, Millis Transfer....

My opinion:
1. Crete/Schaeffer
2. Con-Way Truckload
As a new driver. Don't even think of leasing a truck for at least a year and then I'd advise against a lease. -
stay away from the truckin industry but if you absolutly have to drive i suggest pizza hut or dominos

I have worked for both Pizza hut and Domino's. This was before I got my CDL, so over 20 years ago though lol.
I liked both. Made decent money too. For that time in my life. I think I make more OTR than I did doing that though. And my car I delivered for Domino's with would not be good with the fuel prices now.
A 455SD Pontiac with a tri-power intake is not very good on gas. But I hardly ever broke that 30 min or it's free deal. -
Thanks for the replies. I am looking at the companies recommended. Con-way does seem to pay at a good rate for new drivers as compared to many others. Can't get a good comparison from the Watkins & Shepard website. I do think most trucking companies are trying to hire as good a professional drivers as they can find. Seems to be oppertunity, even though the economy is down right now.
