SPECIAL REPORT: OOIDA now accepting apps for APU grant moneyWednesday, Sept. 8, 2010 - In early August, the Environmental Protection Agency announced that the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association had been selected to receive a $1 million grant to implement an APU project with a total cost of more than $2.3 million. On Tuesday, Sept. 7, OOIDA's Equipment Finance Department began accepting phone calls and applications.
Through the project, approximately 240 emission-cutting auxiliary power units (APUs) will be installed in long-haul diesel trucks operating in EPA Regions 6 and 7.
Qualifying OOIDA members who reside in Region 6 and 7 (states are listed below) may now contact the Equipment Finance Department through OOIDA's main switchboard at 1-800-444-5791 for details on the program.
Margo Fries, manager of OOIDA's Equipment Finance Department, said OOIDA can offer members an upfront 40 percent reimbursement for the cost of the APU and the installation of the unit.
Fries says this 40 percent will be paid straight to the dealer after it's verified that the APU has been installed. The APU must be EPA certified. OOIDA will be giving preference to one-truck owners, but can work with truckers who own up to five trucks.
This particular grant is only for OOIDA members who reside in Region 6 and 7. Region 6 includes Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and 66 tribal nations. Region 7 includes Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and nine tribal nations.
OOIDA is among five organizations included in a total grant of more than $5.1 million in Diesel Emissions Reduction Act funds, granted to aid in diesel emissions reductions in EPA Region 7. The funds are part of $64 million allocated nationwide this fiscal year through DERA's grant program.
Through DERA, EPA provides support for retrofits, engine upgrades, vehicle replacements, idle reduction, cleaner fuels and financing for clean technologies for trucks, buses, and non-road equipment. Overall, the improvements funded by these grants consist of EPA-verified and certified technologies to assist in the reduction of diesel emissions.
The other organizations include the Passenger Vessel Association, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the National School Transportation Association, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and the Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi.

i carry a 5 gal. container, i store it behind the cab, next to a grab rail.

i have been running w/ this syestem april 2010, and NO it is not a legal as far as i now. but it is overhead valve if that would matter? / my one complaint about the unit is it's so quiet i can't hear it running unless everything is turned off inside the cab.

It's not illegal. You just can't plumb in another external gravity feed tank.

    to BIGRAY

Have a mesa address or phone #? My current has a fuel pump with TRIPAK supply lines running to diesel fuel tank. I'd want a fuel pump on the new gen I replace. I'd run a fuel pickup line from the gas supply directly to the gas gen. When I needed to fill gas tank, I'd have to disconnect and drive to the gas side of the t/s. I presume you built the frame the gen sits in? It looks very professional and probably wouldn't get a second look from any cop checking certs. How is it secured to the frame housing the unit? Doesn't it bounce around on it's motor mounts? I had a RV shop install the roof unit and it doesn't leak and looks professionally installed.

yes i made the bracket myself.

as you can see the upper bolts pull the J channel tight to the frame and the lower bolts act as levelers for the frame.

the unit sits on the platform, the bottom of the gen has rubber shock mounter feet, w/ the enclosure keeping the unit inside. by keeping it unfixed to frame platform it makes it easy to remove if needed.

yesturday i installed a inline fuel filter, so no problem removing gen.

Those honda 3000 are really the cadillac of Generators.I know what you mean when you say you can't even hear it run,Folks if you get a chance to hear how quiet these 3000 series run as BigRay has ,you would nevver believe it. I saw two running outside at a tailgate swap meet trailer and i fell in love with them.I own a honda 4500 contractor series though for home use and have nothing but good to say about Honda Generators. When i was saving for it,I almost bought something cheap and a friend said keep saving and you'll never be sorry you waited and got the Honda. So True.

    hey bigray

you may want to fishplate over the weld on that bracket. That snotty weld will eventually fatigue and fail. Just some square pieces turned sideways like diamonds and welded over the top will help it.

    Bigray Thanks this.
