I will say the same as another driver, I did 2 months of training, got my own truck last Wed. And still haven't seen home, since nov. 14th. So far avg. 350 to 400 miles a day but all shorter runs 2 or 3 per day. The longest I've had to wait is now, dropped off load last night at 9:00 and still waiting an hour and a half after getting hours back. One thing is if you get a bad trainer switch ASAP I had 2 good ones so it wasn't bad. Also I've heard DG and FD accounts suck from guys if you r in it for money but if you want home time alot they are great. Good luck

Dedicated with these people are probably going to be your best bet. It will give you expirience and steady work. OTR from what I saw was hit and miss with no miles and a lot of sitting or burning your hours looking for an empty to pick up a load, only to take it to a drop yard so that one of the day cabs could shuttle it across I80 and give you a load they just brought in to take 50 miles up the road to deliver.
Things have really changed I guess for being on a trainer truck, in one of these posts I read your son sat for 2 days on a trainer truck waiting for a load? When I was on a trainer truck they ran us like a team and the most we say was a couple hours. That was my first trainer, second had a dedicated route. I was only with him for a week to finish out my training hours. 275 at the time. Stayed out the entire time 6th week went solo. First delivery for bonus was in Denver where I finished training. Next load went to Ohio. Put in for home time as soon as I got my own truck and didn't head that way for another 1 1/2 weeks. I feel for those who were out longer.
After 6 months Werner picked up new account in my area and I had the Haz-mat, Tanker endorsements needed. Was on that account till I quit in November of 09. My dedicated routes never took me past a terminal so in the 4 1/2 years on that account went through a terminal 4 times. 2 were for truck repairs, 1 for a random wizz quiz, and 1 for new truck.
I consider all this luck. A lot of it right place at the right time.
In other words results may vary, and you just need to know what you want to do and how you want to get there.

My son is having a blast ,started training for them 1/3/2011.He's currently being paid to stay in a hotel while his trainer gets hometime.Went dirtbike riding in 60 degree weather with his trainer,by his trainers house yesterday, the temperature by his house here in NJ was 5 degrees. He said he was going swimming in the hotel pool today. Also he just got a card in the mail from Drivers Legal Plan, prepaid lawyers fees for any tickets he gets while working for Werner. So far he loves it(knock on wood).

Enjoy your free time ,once they hook you up with a trainer you will be running nonstop.Use your time to buy supplies if they have a shuttle to stores.Make sure you have a 0 degree rated sleeping bag for when the APU breaks done (and it will at some point)Have a loaf of bread and PPJ so you don't have to spend a lot on truckstop food.etc.
