Lemme ask a question........
Under the old rules, I could start my day at midnight......
12 to 12:15 pretrip and fuel,
12:15 til 10am "driving".
10am til noon "off duty". (flag post trip)
Noon til 8pm "sleeper"
8pm til 815 "fuel and pretrip"
8:15 til 12 midnite "driving"
Thats 9.75 driving, 10 break, and 3.75 driving, with .5 for fuel and pretrips.
Total driving = 13.5 OR Total "on duty" = 14
Total break = 10
How did ANYTHING change other than the 36hr "reset" ???

Yes, you are correct. But, in his example, he stopped after just 10 hours so all is good. But, I do think I see the same thing I think you think you are seeing (does that make sense?)
I will point out that it seems like you might be thinking of things in a 24 hour period, although I'm not sure. If you are, then that is incorrect and what you do from midnight to midnight is really irrelevant.
What matters is from when you come on duty for the first time to when you go off duty for the last time, then what you did during that period and if you got the correct break before driving again. In your example, when you come back on duty at 8pm, you had your 10 hours so anything you are doing now has nothing to do with what you did that morning, other than how it works with your 70. The fact that both of these periods were on the same calendar day does not matter at all.
Also, it is a 34 hour reset, not 36 hours. Pretty much 24 hours off with a 10 hour break thrown on top of it, so that in theory it will not throw your sleep schedule off from what you were doing before the break.I am medicineman Thanks this. -
If you plan on driving in Canada you might want to consider the 36 hour reset, if not 34 is good for the states. This may have changed, but that's what I heard last.

The thing to watch is you start a new 14 hour period at 8PM so you have to go to bed by 10am the next day at the latest...

So in practice, nothing much changed with actual hours working. Just the way it is worded.
I think.

BTW - I have never been a "day driver". You make better time and have less complications at night. -
And do not drive more then 11 hours in any 14 hour shift.

Just think of it this way. You have 70 hours to work with in an 8 day stretch. You have a 14 hour clock to deal with once you start your pretrip. This clock does not stop unless you plan on doing some split sleeper time. I don't recomend splitting running solo as it messes up your next days available hours.
In that 14 hours you have 11 hours available for driving No more then that or you will be in violation. There is an exception to the 11 hours but you have to be running under a certain amount of miles perday. I forget what it is, either 100 or 150. I never pay attention to that because I hardly ever fall into that bracket anyway so I just keep an OTR log book. Any sleeper or off duty time during your day does not stop you 14 hour clock but it does stop the 70 hour clock.
Make sure all time stamped materials or paperwork match your log.
The 34 hour reset can help you if you are burning up hours fast. If you are burning up only 8 and 3/4 hours a day then you can run 7 days a week forever without needing a reset. So it would be to your benefit to learn how to shave off time during your day to save hours on your 70.I am medicineman Thanks this. -
