I could never afford to go home every weekend. I'm surprised that they are that willing to keep you with short runs if you want to get home that often.
I assume you run for them? How long have you been there? Do you like it?
    Thanks for the input.

TallGuy50, not to get off the subject of Millis too much, but we were with another company out of Maryland that made sure you got home every week whether you wanted to or not (called themselves OTR when dh hired on, but we called them regional). It was strange to say the least, and not a very good money-maker for the driver.

There is no way you could be a profitable OTR driver and be home every weekend (at least that I've seen). The plan is to get my CDL, put in my OTR time then hopefully get a regional gig in a year or so. There are alot of compaines I've seen that want you out 5-6 weeks out at a time. If I can get home every 3 weeks or so, without my DM getting upset because I'm asking for hometime AGAIN...then not giving me miles when I'm supposed to be running, that would be awesome. There are alot of regional and local jobs in the local paper, with good pay, but then require at least 1 yr. OTR first.

When we signed on the company I was speaking about hired DH for an OTR position, but the longest run we got was from Maryland to Knoxville. It took a few runs but we finally determined that their version of OTR was "regional OTR"..lol. In hindsight, our first big clue should have been the small tanks on the trucks.

We made enough money to get by....but not as much as we would running true OTR for sure, not to mention having more drops means more downtime, more qualcomm, more paperwork, basically more of everything. Less pay, more work.

I guess for some people, that may be what they are looking for...Working "OTR" and getting home every weekend. If you actually get a regional gig, the per mile pay is usually a little more, so you don't hurt as much financially.

The guy I went to orientation with went right from his trainers truck to regional in Trenton. He didn't expect to get it that quick but there was an opening. So it is possible. Just depends on timing. 3 weeks in my opinion is a perfect out time in my opinion and wouldn't expect less than two if u want to make any$ . Of course if u live near a. Freight lane u may be able to take 10 at home during week. Im so far out that I tend to stay out so I don't hear complaints about dead heading me home often. Not that I ever have. But im in middle of 8 week out cause with january comes bills and unfortunately. Don't get paid to be home. All good though. My dispatcher reply does everything he can to take care of me.

I'm in PA right near where 380/80/81/84 all pretty much come together. If I can swing by home on a run, that's great, but I agree with you. I think 3 weeks out fair on both ends. How long have you been with them? They keep you busy?

Actually I am not regional - I am OTR.

We have yards close to most of the larger Beer Dist in the Eastern Part of the US and now in TX. Albany is more of a drop yard for glass and beer as well as they do trailer work there. Same with our yard in Streator IL, St. Louis, West Allis WI, and Eden NC. The other locations are actually terminals with service bays as well as drop lots.

Most of our work is either Beer, Glass or Paper.

Let us know how it goes and thanks for using my name <wink wink>!

Spanky is "spot on"! If you really want to go home every two weeks they wont say much but you will not see too many long runs. I usually stay out 5 to 7 weeks before I go home but my situation is different and not for everyone. But it works for me.
