Anyone here do the runs into Alberta, Canada and back?
Wondering how that gig is. How's the miles and pay? Are you home every weekend?
Does it get boring? How's the roads in the winter?

I don't know, I did speak briefly with a driver in Helena about going up there, He seemed happy.
-
Guess I'll find out soon enough. I signed up today..
I should've named this thread, "Do you have the Canadian Runs?" -
thats cool, every time im there on the weekend theres a lot of parked trucks thats for sure!
-
sounds like a nice lil gig if your local to mizoo,,, we move there next week!
need to get my cdl first though lol -
Ya I'm local to Missoula.. hope it turns into a good gig. Not sure if its 1 or 2 trips out a week. I hope two.. 1 trip/week doesn't seem like it'd generate enough cash.
Flying Scotsman: Where you getting your cdl? Up in Missoula or somewhere else? -
ill be going to sage in missoula the beginning of april...got some other work going on right now that ends in march..

AB should be good for mileage based drivers, as there are lots of miles in the place. Avoid Fort McMurray like the plague. Hwy 63 is the nastiest piece of road I've ever come across; plain dangerous. Probably the best run would be from Coutts/Sweetgrass to Grande Prairie. It's divided highway nearly all the way. Hit Calgary at the right time of day and you'll breeze through without slowing down. Avoid Edmonton completely at any time of day or night. All of it's drivers should be locked up and the key thrown away. Use hey 19 and 60 to bypass the place. Apart from that, look forward to sitting at 70 mph for as long as you cab be bothered.
Winter driving varies. Right now it's so warm that I had to shut down early today as the roads were melting. After nearly bogging down my truck and trailer I gave up. Temps around -10 to -20 Celcius are comfortable for driving. Don't use UFA diesel unless you have to. They appear to sell summer diesel year round. I lost a day because I left myself short and had to fill up on the stuff next day the truck wouldn't start.
Hope this is helpful. Feel free to ask if you need any info about AB and northern BC. Note that BC means "Bring Cash". A Canadian customs officer told me that. -
I just met a driver the other day who does Canada runs. He was unhappy about something, but also said I shouldn't do it.. "there's no money in it," and some more, but I couldn't understand what he was raging about.
I'll wait to see for myself, but it wasn't encouraging.
Dionysus: I'm actually from Edmonton, AB, originally.. so I know a little of what you speak! Frt McMurray IS a hole.. it was only built up for the oil work in the area. I didn't know the hwy there was so bad though. Is it just full of holes or what?
I learnt to drive in Edmonton, and then honed my mad skillz in New England as a MAsshole; so I might fit right in! Can Edmonton drivers be worse than LA? I hope not..
You mean 70 kph right? 70 mph wouldn't be bad if my truck could go that fast
The office told me.. not to fuel in Canada, they didn't say why though. I guess that's why. Strange... Wonder why its different, or how its different. I mean, Canadians run their own trucks too, so.. huh. Maybe they use some additives or something.
What do you do for cell or internet? I just realized I'm going to have to shell out for both cdn and usa coverages. That blows. A cheap cell isn't bad, but mobile internet will be a pain. -
63 is not so much full of holes as full of ###-holes. It seems the 4-wheeler drivers who use it would rather die trying to overtake rather than wait for a safe place and time. there are apparently plans to twin the route so in time it might become safer.
Don't know why you would be told not refuel in Canada. Cost maybe. With the dollars at parity and diesel at around $1.08 a liter, it might be cheaper to struggle back to Sweetgrass on fumes.
I did mean 70 miles per hour. The speed limit is 110km/h and for the most part you can bowl along unimpeded.
