I use Telus for cell and mobile Internet. Bell and Rogers are options too and there are pay as you go schemes but I don't know anything about them. Whichever way you go it will likely be cheaper than incurring roaming charges on your US phone.

my cheap walmart cell doesn't even do roaming. But I was thinking of using my skype number anyway.. I need reliable mobile broadband for that though.
I checked out Rogers and Telus.. pretty steep prices for only 5gb/mo. Not happy with that.. unless W/S compensates for these additional expenses. And I have a feeling they don't do that.. so I'll have to keep searching.
how many times do you cross the border a week on avg? and how many miles do drivers get on avg/week? are almost all the drops driver-assist? -
ive heard alot of drivers "get by" on using wifi whenever they stop at truck stops and picking up on peoples unsecured networks?....is this something you do already?
since were heading to montana very soon my wife and I just got on with verizon..there kinda spendy but ive heard the coverage in the 48 is great, not so sure about roaming aboot north of the border eh? -
If you have Verizon for your mobile phone carrier, they used to have a plan that would let you make/receive calls in Canada without having to pay roaming charges.......the only drawback I can remember was the "unlimited" night & weekend was reduced to 1000 per month. If you want to change plans back & forth, be sure to do it on the day your monthly billing cycle starts or they'll hit you with a bunch of retroactive roaming charges. I seem to remember their broadband internet access was very expensive, so I just didn't use that service when I'd go there. Getting online where there was public access wasn't too hard in cities. Call them and see what they offer.

I don't know about North of the border, but I have a Verizon data plan with the Mifi, 5Gb/mo. $60, but i NEVER was not able to connect to the 'net anywhere I was, even in some of the boonie places truck stops are at...

The guy I used to drive for had verizon phones. They worked everywhere the guys were in Canada or the US.
-
thats what i use is verizon--very very few dead spots--and you can get it for both us and canada--about 1000 minutes--i think it was around 100 a month

No, I would never use an unsecured wifi! unless I was desperate. Or not sending ANY personal info over the network. I use millenicom's services. (There's a thread on them in the electronics section of this forum I believe. $70/mo unlimited) But of course, they don't have a plan for Canada. You end up roaming.. and that's too pricey.
Ya, verizon has great coverage up here. I just hate them as a company. I bought a cheap phone from walmart; its actually a tracfone. I'm not one of those people that needs a fancy phone. If I was, I'd get a droid from verizon.. -
Sounds like my best, most efficient, path here, is to drop my millenicom account, and get hooked up with the verizon voice and data plan for canada and the US. Sigh... I keep getting new phones and services, and then I have to change them. this'll be my third cell in 3 months. Getting expensive. But I guess once I get it right I'll be set. I'll sure miss unlimited internet.

me too, we just set up with verizon and we got the free phones that are great for texting(those with a real keypad), but i just checked out that minicom company... hup..is the coverage good and how is the download speeds,, i fancy getting a slingbox to watch my tv shows from home and atleast then you can be on a secured network all of the time?
