From all that I see here all I see are a bunch of complainers. I don't want to drive stick, I want a trainer and the list goes on.

Just when or how are you going to become a truck driver? Learn to shift you will get better as time goes on. Trainer? for what? Learn to read a map and ask for directions. When I first started out I was on my own 6 days from driving school. I learned along the way and that's what makes me a Pro today. Don't listen to the driving mills it's all lies. If you can kind of drive you can make it. You just get better.
If you need help ask another driver, he or she will always help. Or as me.
I just want to see more truckers out there, then the ones who don't care.

all I expect is a 2011 automatic truck with dircetv and satelite radio. I expect a fridge and mircowave, I expect to be home everyday and a trainer for 1 year, oh and she better look like Mila Kunis. Did I mention I'm not working for less than 65k/yr.?

    LOL

    Good post.

I ran "local" and "log trucks" for many years.
Never drove out of MS/AL/LA/FL/TN... and no further north than Memphrica.

Then in 1994 I went OTR.

2 day "orientation" was all I got.

I was "issued" a cabover cornbinder with a hump and a bunk.
Dispatcher handed me a set of bills for a preloaded trailer and said, "SEE-YA Later".

The load went to Minneapolis Minnesota.
(yes, went right up the river on 2 lanes most of the way cause I was used to "little roads".)

3 days later I called for next load.
3 months later, I had been most all over the south, east, northeast, and midwest.

I think the "sink or swim" would be dangerous today.
It's a whole new generation, and they aren't like we were.
MOST never even drove a 4 wheeler til they were 16 or so years old.

This certainly seems like a wasted space of a thread. Especially when there are several threads here from new drivers, like myself who are doing just fine and enjoying the work.

But I guess everyone needs to complain and pick on someone else in order to make themselves feel better.

I understand your point about wanting drivers out there to give a ####, know how to do things and do there jobs right. It helps if your trainer does his job right also. Not ALL of us have been whiners. and for the most part ask intelligent questions. Regarding trainees having issues with their trainers, shouldn't they complain (or whine as you call it) if the trainer is doing a piss poor job of teaching or not teaching anything at all , or should the trainee just shut up, and take it bending over. That logic seems backwards to me.

Well.. I'm a "new driver"... but I understand exactly where Beer Runner is coming from.... IMO the only thing he left out of his OP is the fact that the majority of those he refers to are usually under the age of 25 or so.

I call 'em "Generation X-Box"

They think the world owes 'em something simply due to the fact that they are breathing... & if it requires any more thought and/or work than pushing a button then it's all too unfair & needs to changed to accomodate them.

Now, if you don't fit that mold, good for you, you'll certainly go a lot further than the vast majority of your peers... but when someone pushing 50 can out-think & out-work 90% of those half his age... well... it is what it is.

It's a sad thing when a few bad apples spoil something for a majority... but when the stereotype is right more often than not the few good ones will just have to work that much harder to change their image... life's not fair... never will be... get used to it.

I'll be 49 y/o in 2 weeks, and although I'll take the job seriously and do my best to get myself out of a situation, I without a doubt will be needing advice from the old stalwarts of the profession. I agree that Generation X-box is a suitable title for some of the younger guys/gals. I have no use for them (x-box, etc.) and personally cannot understand a persons infatuation with playing video games for hours on end! I am a child of the Atari (pong!) and Pac-man years, so that may be why I hate video games. Boring, and what a waste of time.
