My 3406B has an oil leak between the injection pump and the engine block. How hard is it to remove the Injection pump and is this a common problem on these motors?

it is not so easy. First of all position engine in TDC. Check marks on injection pump.

Remove all tubes first, becouse pump is heavy and yoy may easily damage them

Do you have Cat Sis to get manual?

No I dont have a service manual I've been trying to find one. I might let the repair shop have a go at this. But idk I was thinking replacing the steel lines that go from the pump to various places because they looks old and rusty.

Yeah that pump is pretty heavy.Pin time the flywheel. you will see a 3/8" plug in the side of the pump. This is your timing hole for the injection pump. It will have a slot cut in the camshaft to insert your timing pin to lock the pump. Remove the front advance cover. (looks like a hat on the front cover) Remove the six bolts that hold it to the pump. Remove the advance unit. You may want to check the weights inside. Over time the shoes will wear and make a groove in the thrust bearing. I just hit the high spots, If you want step-by-step detail let me know. There's only two o-rings between the block and pump, and one between front cover and pump.

Ok thanks. well it pours oil out only when its cold once the trucks warm up it slows to a tiny drip if anything. This sound about right for bad o rings ?

Seems to me it would be the other way around. There is an advance mechanism to advance timing when the oil is cold hoiwever. Could be coming from the rear of the pump from the added oil pressure since its thicker? Where are your leaks at?

Its hard to see with the oil everywhere but its coming out between the pump and the engine block if it warms up I will try to degrease or steam clean it so I can get a better location.

do steam clean always before you remove pump. there is a sand and dust mixed with oil that may come into the engine. it is not good.

3406B is the engine of old school, removing and installing pumps is the forgoten art. Anyway be carefull and accurate with timing marks.

this job will take most of the day but it isnt necessarilly hard. this isnt that uncommon of a leak either. we had 3 of these and 2 of them had this leak. ours leaked between the pump and side of the block. theres an o ring in there. those steel lines are pretty thick and last time i bought any they were around 100 bucks each so unless theres a lot of nasty rust u may wanna reuse them. but b carefull w them cuz they are fairly brittle. mostly solid with a small hole in the middle. hope that helps. good luck.

Use a cherry picker to get pump off, it will save your back and arms.

Being your truck is an 89 you might only have 4 bolts holding the timing advance on there. Mines a 4MG and that all it has. While you have the timing advance off you might as well replace the seals and o-rings. When you put the timing gear back on make sure the advance part is pushed in before tightening everythign down and starting motor.
