I got my license about 5 years ago. Circumstances were not in my favour and only ended up driving for a few months.
Now I am at a position again where I want to return to truck driving.
I asked around, and everyone tells me to take a refresher course, which I will.
But at the same time I am looking at companies, and trying to see who is hiring, or might hire a some what new driver.
Any advice what companies to check out in the Toronto, ontario area?
returning to industry

Look around for the biggest companies, pick the best of the worst and gain some experience. Schneiders is hiring. Not sure if you tried them but they may foot some of the cost on a refresher but you need to be able to cross the border for these bigger companies.

I took my CDL course with a guy who hired on to Kriska. He is doing really well there. They will have you out with a trainer and then you have to test out for your own truck.
Stay away from Challenger and Travellers. Haven't known anything good about either of them. Challenger used to be good, now they are just another BFI.
If you don't mind doing flatbed, try J&F Trucking out of Ajax. I started out there. Old trucks but very well maintained. Usually out 5 days then back for the weekends. All regional work (within 500 miles of TO).Digitalwarrior Thanks this. -
If you want to jump back into the pool give Bison a call, there in Mississauga, ON. Big Freight Systems out of Steinbach, MB really need drivers. Any big company in Canada will hire you. Put your year in, and then get out and look for a smaller company with better pay.

Thanks everyone.
Will consider these companies.
In case you are wondering, have been doing landscaping for the past 5 years.
Its great to be outdoors, and I can definitely say that I learned a lot more then just how to cut the grass. But my god the hours of work and expectations are just too much. -
You are lucky your woman lets you. LOL My Lady told me that if I go back on the road, I shouldn't bother coming home

Most of the big outfits are bunch of no good thieves, but they are more likely to hire a rookie because they know rookie is willing to put up with abuse a little more than the experienced driver...
They are mostly about the same and they are running on the same tired script
They will make all kinds promises just to get you in, but rarely deliver on them.
They are mostly hoping, that as long as they throw you enough crumbs to survive you won't bother looking for another job.... -
Hello Everyone
Just wanted to give you an update. Completed the truck driver refresher course, finally got my FAST card. I've been applying at countless companies. The only one that even bothered responding is somewhat far from my house, 1,5 hours drive to their yard. -
Try HIGHLAND they offer a newbie deal on their website
* Exceptions to the one (1) year OTR requirement may be made on an individual basis if the driver applicant has a stable work history and has received their training from an approved accredited school. If you have limited over-the-road experience that does not qualify you to be a single qualified over-the road driver we have limited positions available in our on-job-training program. The program consists of paid over-the-road driving under the direct instruction of a qualified trainer with a strong emphasis on skills upgrading, safety and communication.
