My husband is purchasing a truck and signing up with Schneider National. In ohio , you can be exempt from paying sales tax on the purchase of a truck if you can provide the PUCO, MC, or ICC # of the carrier you are signing on with. He's taken his physical, applications been approved and he's just waiting till he picks up his truck to go to orientation in Greenbay. The problem is his recruiter is telling him Schneider does not allow the sales exemption. Won't he have these numbers once he signs his contract and how is this anything on them anyway. It doesn't effect them at all. They are just saying yes he's coming to work for us. Is the recruiter wrong or does not understand? Any feedback would be appreciated. He's a long time truck driver but new to the owner-operator. Thanks

It might have something to do where the company is headquartered.

if that is true.......which I don't know.......I would think you could take it off at the end of the year at tax time, If he's on his own, and your asking........it's time to find you a accountant.

You don't pay tax on parts, but you can't get out of tax on the truck.

I know this year you could have. Any big ticket items like cars, trucks, boats, and etc can have some deductions.

I know we can take it off at the end of the year, just trying to save a few thousand up front instead of at the end. And yes Ohio sales tax law says transportation for hire vehicle can be excluded from paying sales tax up front with lease agreement from a company. Thank you all for your comments and yes, we are getting in touch with an accountant to help us get started.

Not that this will help any but i have bought new vehicles from other states.
What ever state it gets registered in charges the taxes on the vehicle.

For example,I bought a new motor home in NY,there was no sales tax until i got home to NC and went to get the license plates for it.
The DMV here in NC collected the sales tax.
It sucked because they based it on retail price that was 8000 bucks more than i paid for it.

A lot of states don't require the owner of a commercial vehicle to pay sales tax provided it is being leased to a carrier. You can't register/plate apportioned without operating authority or a lease agreement paperwork if you are trucking for hire far as I'm aware; which is none of schneider (or any carrier)'s business. unless you are plating through them, in which case they might have an alternative plan for o/o's.
