I'm looking at buying one of these and I would like your opinion and experience with this motor plus I have questions.
It's the E-7 / 350 (1999 ) model
Thanks
Mack E-7

Good motor. A 1999 model should be mechanical.
The one I drove was in a RB model Mack dump truck. No problem with that motor. -
A '99 will be electronic. It is a good motor, but that year those motors had problems eating cams. Have a dealer run the VIN to see if it's been done or not.

ditto, good engine, I used to drive a road-train with a 400hp in it and with gross of 95,000kg / 209000lbs it handled it and had no issues.

I occasionally help a guy out and will run a 96 I think Mack CH600 with a E-7, says that it's been turned up to 454 horses. Nice old truck, got 6" straight stacks that exit about 1 foot away from my left ear! Sounds good and pulls good. Still isn't my KW with a Cat though.

1995 was the last year of the mechanical engines. We have a 1999 e-7 400 that we just picked up Tuesday from getting a new cam installed. A $6000 bill. This is the second 99 e-7 400 we have had. The other one also lost a cam. The jakes on these engines are not very strong. Other than that they seem fine. All the one's we have or have had run for a long time. We have a 1995 mech 350 with just short of 1,000,000 miles and the only prob. we have had was one turbo at about 500k and the pump needed rebuilding at about 650k. Its never even had a head off. The cam issue on the 99s might make me a little scared of the truck but if its already be changed than I think it's prob. ok.

Good solid engines, as previously said, those are prone to cam problems. I helped do one at work, I know it was a hefty bill but its running like a top now.
-
Have to agree on the weak Jakes. 55k goin down a 10 percent grade about 10 miles an hour on a dump truck can get kinda old.
-
Thanks guys..... I'm looking into the service records to see if she's had a cam.

Just for grinns..... whats involved with a cam swap ?
Comes out the front so radiator, pulleys etc. What else? Valve covers and rockers, rods etc? Followers come out the top ?
Gotta do bearings while there? Inspect only?
Lets have it.....
Cause I'm thinking....it's only a 350....... for 6 grand I can easily get a low mileage Mack pull out and get more horses to boot.....
