Hello everyone. I got my full CDL last Thursday. That day I sent out my first application. The next day I had gotten a call back for an interview. I drove two hours each way that day to meet them. At the end of the interview she told me to "think it over the weekend". I was also told to talk to HR on Monday about benefits. I got her voice mail on Monday after talking to HR. I had forgot to give her my long forum and medical card, so I had them faxed from the school and asked if there was anything else that she needed. She never called back that day. She didn't call back yesterday, either. I just assumed that she was busy, and I didn't want to bother her. Today I decided to call her. We bs'd about the weather for a few seconds, and she had told me that I needed to give her the past 5 years of tax info. That's personal information as far as I'm concerned. No one else's business. I'm not sure why they would want that. I had given them my employer ID number. I thought that would be enough... The only reason why I'm jumping through the hoops is because they offered me .34/mile after 20 days of training.

    Thoughts?

I ran into this problem when applying to some companies. They use your taxes to verify the last five years of employment instead of calling to verify. I had a few companies tell me they could not verify my employment because of who I worked for. I had worked for a major telephone company and the department of defense. Big companies like Mcdonalds do not verify employment, they use companies like theworknumber.com to verify employment. In a nutshell these guys are being lazy.

Yeah, but when the IRS requires you keep 3 years of tax returns equals problems.
It amazes me the quest of some companies for information. I think it was Crete that asked me for a notorized statement from my neighbor claiming I was unemployed for 2 months. Cya!

    Only in trucking...

They are only required to check the last 3 years employment. I don't know what it is about being self employed. I suppose they assume that you are lying if you work for yourself. In fairness, it is important for any potential employer to be able to verify past work history. There should be a better way other than giving tax information. You could make a copy of your returns, black out the important information and then send it to them. You may also check to see if there is another way to verify work history, such as a customer list. You could put a list of 5 or so customers with whom you have done business for several years.

They are only required to check driving positions held within the last 3 years. It's optional for them if they want to check any burger flipping jobs you held in the last 3 years.

The Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986 signed into law on October 27, 1986 MANDATES that every person applying for a job as a Commercial driver (Truck AND Bus) provide a 10 year work history, and MANDATES that the employer verify at least three of those 10 years.
Providing 5 years of "tax records" would satisfy those requirments without need for them to verify anything.

"Too much personal information" you thimk?
They are already going to have your SSN, address and more information than is provided on your "tax records" anyway.

Is it too much to ask? Too intrusive?
I hear McDonalds is still hiring...
