Well I found 2 of the same truck with nearly identical miles (International 9400i with ~650k). I really like the trucks and I want to get one, I just can't decide which one to get. One is an '03 detroit series 60 430 and the other is an '05 cummins ISX 430. Wanting to get some opinions on which you think offers better reliability at those higher miles The detroit is a bit cheaper but the ISX also comes with an APU. I know the cummins have had EGR problems but is it really that bad? I can't find any other major complaints with those Cummins motors and I can always do an EGR delete/disconnect. Then again I haven't heard anything negative on the pre EGR detroit it seems like a fantastic motor.

yes the ISX EGR and the cooler for it are weak points. I would think the APU would be a huge plus depending on the brand/age/condition.
When Detroit became a Freightliner only engine, many dealerships IH, KW, and Volvo stopped or really didn't like doing Detroit work, so that could be an issue for you with an orphan truck/engine combo.

my current truck has a detroit pre egr and i had a kw t2000 with the isx and the isx had more power and was nicer to drive... and my isx didn't cost as much to maintain as the detroit has.. and im in the process of getting a different truck just because im really likeing the detroit less and less everyday:biggrin_2557:

and as stated the IH and KW dealers don't like to work on detroits and i can't say i blame them

I love cummins, but not EGR versions. So I would like to get truck with DEEC-Iv ore DECK V. But better look for good pre emission engeine, like DD Deries 60 with DEEC-IV, Mercedes OM460 E2/E3 (not E4 ore EPA2005) ore N14. ISX is an expencive toy.

I love old good 3406 too.

Thanks for the replies guys. I hadn't even thought about the dealership issue with the Detroit and International combo. NWMAXI, what year is your ISX?

the truck is an 08 with an 07 engine pre DPF, i never had any egr issues with that truck they problem i had was the coolant level sensor on 3 occasions and the engine would derate what a pain that was

The pre EGR Detroit has a lot of potential for performance and fuel mileage with some upgrades, but so does the ISX. Its a simple process to delete the EGR on the pre 08 ISXs. The APU is a big plus in my book.

What are the transmissions, rear end ratios and tire sizes of each truck? This would be a big influence on the performance and fuel mileage. What speed do you plan to run at?

Those are all about the same (.2 difference). I like the APU as well.

Hey Pablo I understand in your line of work you probably work on a lot of ISXs. Do they tend to have common problems other than the EGR issues?

I think KW stopped using DD around 2000. My KW dealer doesn't really like to work on them but they will do basic work and troubleshooting. Anything further (like weird operability issues) and I was told to take it to Inland Diesel, which is the real DD dealer in our area...
