Hey guys....what do you think about this..

I am currently driving a Sterling 9500 and 40ft flat for a large home improvement chain. Our sterling is in the shop for ABS work and a door adjustment. They brought another truck in from a different store. This truck was a 2009 INT with 44k on it and the truck looked like it had been on the road since jerry reed was hauling bootleg beer from Texarkana...This "company", I have noticed, does not take care of their fleet at all. Constant problems mechanically and someone must be pencil whipping their inspections.

I did my pre-trip on the loaner truck and found that the steering tires were well below the regs as well as the air brakes and the trailer seemed to be bouncing up off the 5th wheel when it was being delivered to us. I immediately told my supervisor that it did not pass pre-trip and it was not safe to drive. Of course they blew a gasket and threatened to fire me. I stuck to my guns though and plan to be at work in the morning.

    opinions?

driver is the last cog but the cog that says it stays or goes . if you see its not fit and is out of regs do not drive it ! , take pictures and keep documents for when you go to unemployment/lawsuit , but its your license ,not the name on the door so , its your choice , faulty equipment is a serious matter in a accident . you could try psychological warfare saying well, if its your wife and kids I run over and kill you won't mind ....you said it was good .

I learned to play dirty several years back , funny when it involves the safety managers family in the equation things change quickly as now it involves there loved ones .. ( actually it was a state trooper that did this too me when I got pulled over because I broke a spring on a tank trailer less than 1 mile from the fuel terminal ). He knew me and he knew I inspected the equipment ( and we went and found the broken spring pack ) . I am glad he did the level1 that day .. but that story is for another day .

Just rememebr Diesel bears aren't our enemy as they make sure we are safe too, by doing there jobs .

Don't you carry the OWNERS RESPONSIBILTY slip in case you were to get pop for inspection ? If the brakes work and it runs half way descent, go for it. Everyone is spoil lately preferebly company driver, :biggrin_2553:they always want the newer truck. My first truck i drove was a 1970 GMC cabover with a 6-71 detroit 10speed, 3 axle and this was back in 1979. It look like ###### and gutless, but everything work in it and mechanically safe.
Don't judge it by looks, do the walk around inspection with YOUR SUPERVISOR and point out the visible problems, Low tread aint gonna hurt anything, if you see stell cords or cuts thats a different story.

Are you gonna pay his fines and suffer his points under CSA, if he get pulled over for a roadside? :biggrin_25516:
Or GOD forbid has an accident, because some piece of Equipment was not up to snuff, and kills some granny and her grandkids on the way to the zoo. Are you gonna do his jail time? :biggrin_25513:

Dang it, I forgot about the CSA. Im still trying to adjust to that, I was thinking about the old school days of trucking. I take "SOME" back of the thread I posted above.

Well to be honest it sound like you are being a little pissy about driving a slip. An 2009 INT with 44k absolutly has self adjusters on it so check the shoes, a set of steers below min tread at 44K....Maybee if you really tried to scuff them off. The 5th wheel I'll give you that one ....It may need an adjustment. It's aboslutly your call and you might want to take a second look before you put your job in jeopardy in todays economy. The call is yours and yours alone.
