just a suggestion to save you guys money on internet service, if ya got a phone with unlimited internet access you can "tether" it to your laptop and have unlimited service for 29.99 or whatever your cell phone provider charges for the unlimited plan, ends up a lot cheaper instead of having phone internet and seperate card for laptop. as most of ya know the truckstops wifi aint free
-
and truck stops wifi sucks. not to mention, in a large truck stop, there is bound to be one or two truckers who are computer nuts who can hack into your laptop if you're connected to a public network like a truck stop wi fi.....
-
Need a good firewall anyway you go online.
Does tethering=dial up speed?
I have Virgin Mobile for ISP. I have $40 a month unlimited. No contract. It went up to $50. I am locked in for now. If I pay after the 15th of the month It will have to be $50.
I didn't read the fine print when re-upping tonight. If I do it early I will lose any time I had coming to me. I was due to renew the 3rd or the 4th.

A good way to save some cash on truck stop WiFi is to pay for the $1.99 one-hour price. Do as much as you can in that hour. If you need a second hour, pay the $1.99 a second time. After those 2 hours are up, go to bed!
The only time I've paid for the 24-hour service is if I'm doing a 34-hour restart somewhere, if I have an extended delivery time where I can afford (time-wise) to use 2 hours before bed and then another hour or two after I wake up before I get rolling, or if I know I'll be at another of the same truck stop chain later on that night.
2 one-hour charges is still cheaper than one 24-hour charge. Plus then you won't get carried away and stay up all night surfing the net. Once that 2nd hour is up, that's your cue to get some sleep. -
Yea that would work if you park at the truck stops all the time. I like having the internet where ever I park. I don't spend that much time online but I do like the freedom of being able to check my facebook and email anywhere I want and especially when I bumped the dock and it takes them a few hours or more to unload me.
Gives me something to do and the time goes by fast. Most of the time I get 3G but here in Columbus I am getting 4G and it is a major difference. So far everywhere I have been I have a connection. Even out in the middle of nowhere in a rest area.
To me the extra money I pay a month is entertainment and I enjoy getting online to read and check that the directions I am getting will work. So far I have not had any issues with Sprint and happy I got it. Might look into the phones tethered thingy when I actually switch to Sprint for phone service. -
I considered buying an air card so I looked it up on Verizon's site. If I read it correctly, it's $100 for the card plus a 2-year contract of however much per month it is. I'm still trying to justify in my head if that, in the long run, will be cheaper than doing the truck stop WiFi. I don't park at truck stops all the time, or truck stops that offer WiFi all the time.

For a new contract, they'll more than likely give you the device free - and you sign a two-year contract. There will be a 5-gigabyte limit, unless you pay for more bandwidth. OTOH, there are very few places I don't get coverage.

I use the tether and think it is great. I have a blackberry through Verizon with internet on the phone. The cord came with my phone and all I had to do was pay a one time $50 to purchase the tether app. Then download it on the phone and on the computer. The speed is comparable with DSL. Not cable fast but faster than dial-up.
