You have demonstrated your own misguided preceptions here.
What you don't understand is this....
I'm not a truck driver or an O/O, although I drove a nice KW Aerodyne for about 5 years in my early 20's
I'm the guy who owns the business that manufactures the loads that you haul. The only reason I joined this fine forum was to learn more from the pros about specing out a lowrider 389 to pull my 53' Featherlite display trailer to further promote my food processing business, and I love trucks and respect those who drive them as the hardest working people alive...
Having said that, I have almost 50 people working for me.
I think I am well qualified at 52 to finally "get it" since I started from scratch.
If you don't think your general appearance, and the appearance of your equipment make a difference, you are in no position to judge just who does and who doesn't "get it".
If you show up at my place looking for a job, and if you didn't take the time to take a shower, brush your teeth, dress in clean clothes and comb your hair, you won't even get past the secretary.
The same goes for the O/O. If the equipment is clean, and the driver presents themselves in a professional way, they have started to earn my respect as a serious pro.
If not, well, I imagine you know what that feeling is since you do seem equipped to process the importance of those priority basics as of yet..
So, maybe a clean truck, or a shower in the last month doesn't make a difference when you line up to haul that .75 cent a mile freight, a professional approach does make it easier to understand what it takes to slide under the $3.00 a mile load.Last edited: Feb 27, 2011

Being that you have it listed as 10 years as a trucker but yet you just stated you aren't, just knocked your credibility down to nothing...
Most will agree that 99% of shippers have no clue what someone is driving. All they care about is that it gets to its destination. Thats just simple facts.
Although I do agree that some people need to learn what soap and water are for. But just cause they don't shower every night and wash their trucks every week doesn't mean they won't get the job done and it doesn't mean they will work for nothing.
If you was really a business man you would already know that.
Like I said earlier...... Good Luck. Cause its obvious you have no clue as to the reality of trucking. -

Well my 1st choice is Ptb. have owned and driven enough to see the difference. True the cab is not huge inside but i'm not a really big guy so it fits fine. Part of my choice pertains to wrenchibilty owned other brands that were not wrench friendly. KW is right up there also. Just my personal preference. I think Mack has an excellent vocational truck. Freightliner would not know what a GOOD door frame looked like if it kissed them on the lips. Come on how hard is it. Bought 2 Ftl,s in 1989 and Melvin Atkin(AofI,Hamilton,In. King of the heavy haulers) told me flat out i would never be happy with those trucks and i was not. As far as clean(the body and the ship) i go with clean. Les is correct that there are plenty of guys who get the job done very well who maybe are not spotless. Me i like to be clean and drive a clean truck. It's just me,it's been my trademark for years and i think it has given me an edge over my competion.

I've kind of tried to stay out of this who looks like what debate for a while--but I guess (as usual) I cannot keep my mouth shut long!LOL
Anyway--the old saying book by it's cover seems to apply here. I am usually--neat and clean--very presentable you might say--But when is it you saw me? (As I've said before--I do almost all LTL) So did you see me after 10-12 drops today in NY traffic and I'm walking across the T/S @7pm on a 90Deg. summer evening--heading for the shower--looking like something the cat drug in? Does that really reflect who I am? My truck--or my 36+y/o business?
Of course there are always variables--so at what point do you decide this individual is unworthy etc?
Just my $.02 -
I like to be clean in appearance and keep a clean truck. However, being a "dirt hauler," you can imagine I get dirty at times. So while I do agree with 'olhand about not judging a book by its cover, because some situations, planned or not, can leave a guy rather fuilthy, I would like to point out that George C said "if you come to my place looking for a job..."
I do believe if you are out trying to get a job or land a customer, first impressions (appearance) is everything. -
You're right on Dutchman--wouldn't go to something important like that--but like you said about getting dirty at your work--I did want to point that out!
Flying Dutchman Thanks this. -
