IOWA CITY, Iowa - A woman was pronounced dead on scene after police said she jumped from an Interstate 80 overpass and landed on the hood of a semi-tractor trailer Tuesday morning.

Emergency crews responded to the eastbound lane of I-80 at mile marker 249 around 8:50 a.m. for a report of a vehicle hitting a pedestrian.

Upon arrival, crews found a middle-aged woman lying on the hood of the semi. Police confirmed she came from the overpass of Herbert Hoover Highway. The woman was taken from the scene by the Johnson County Medical Examiner.

Police have identified the woman as Shannon Hierseman of rural Iowa City.

Police said the driver of the semi was not injured in the incident and no other vehicles were involved. Traffic was not completely blocked off as one lane of I-80 was kept open for traffic.

I have read from a few sources with conflicting reports, Some say it was a woman and others say a man. Maybe the reason to jump.

    Condolences to her family.

I really hope the driver will be able to get past this. That would have to be a very hard thing to deal with.

Suicide by truck; there have to be easier, less painful ways to check out then that...

What these sad individuals don't understand is they always take two lives when they do this ####....

wow that sux. This happened to a friend of my dads in boston. Guy jumped off a bridge near boston sand and gravel for those who know. It was timed so perfect, he ended up in the grill. Needless to say the driver didn't drive after that, really messed with him

this is why suicide is considered to be a Selfish act! Things are that bad and you want to die? well then go in the bathroom and blow your head off but why involve/ruin someone else's life? i dont get it.

    why do they do this?????
twice in the gta i have been caught up in traffic cause some person decides they want to be a news item when they do them selves in--i feel for the persons family cause they were put thru this along with countless hundreds of other people
look if you want to kill yourself ,so be it--go do it someplace private--its no good being the highlite of that days news if you cant watch the #### thing yourself---
or better yet--go get some help then do something good that will get you on the news--cause if you ever jump in front of me and live--you sure will wish you didnt

Private or not, it still is a selfish act and leaves anyone who had a relationship with the deceased struggling with the causes.
